Vivian Tillman is Finding Her Stride

Vivian Tillman is balancing school, sports, and service with determination and heart. Supported by family, teammates, and neighbors, she is discovering what it means to grow through commitment and community.

At just 14 years old and a freshman in high school, this Vinings Estates resident is already balancing academics, athletics, and service with impressive focus and heart.

Living in the neighborhood since 2016, she says, “My favorite part is my neighbors, the community and how close it is to my school.” That sense of connection shows, with her  busy schedule and the way she talks about the people around her.
Vivian has been a gymnast since just six years old, but this month kicked off with training in  a new sport: Lacrosse.  “I was inspired to try lacrosse because I was interested in playing a sport at Whitefield and that gave me a chance to play on a team with my school friends.”

Giving back is just as important to her as athletics, both locally and internationally. “I enjoy helping others around me and I tutor a 6th grader at my school.” “I also just went on a mission trip to serve girls in the Dominican Republic. This trip was very special to me, and the experience I had was unforgettable.”

She credits strong role models for shaping her outlook. “My parents are very supportive and hard working and I look up to them everyday.” She also values the relationships built through gymnastics. “My gymnastics teammates have also shown me what a true bond is. even if we’re not at the same school. .” Inspiration also comes from the classroom. “My honors biology teacher is passionate about her subject and makes me want to be a better student.”

Her dedication has paid off. “Last semester I worked very hard at school and ended with straight A’s, even though my practice schedule was 4:30-8:30 everyday.” She adds, “I have also been given the award Gymnast of the Year by my coaches.”

Like many athletes, she has faced challenges along the way. “I have had setbacks from injuries, but those just taught me that no matter what happens, you can always come back.”

Looking ahead, her hopes extend far beyond sports and school. “I hope to go around the world and serve others to show them that no matter what, there’s someone who cares for them.” Her advice to others is simple and heartfelt. “If you work at something every day, you can do anything you pursue.”

Above all, she values the community that surrounds her. “My neighbors are my best friends I have gained friendships for life and people who support me always.”
