The YMCA Is Back in Sarasota!

Mary Sims and Shawna

For those interested in taking full advantage of the benefits of living west of the trail, look no further than the Sarasota City YMCA which is deeply rooted in community. At the intersection of Bahia Vista and S. Euclid Avenue, the YMCA is conveniently located a short drive (or bike ride) from many west of trail neighborhoods. The YMCA in Sarasota experienced some transition between 2019 and 2023 that culminated in the unification of the former Sarasota YMCA branches with the YMCA of Southwest Florida. The YMCA of Southwest Florida is an association comprised of 10 branches stretching from Bradenton to Bonita Springs. What many people do not realize, however, is that every YMCA branch is unique to the community it serves because it is designed to be supported and shaped by the community itself. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the Sarasota community saved its YMCA and now the YMCA offers the community a place like no other where residents of all ages can come together to learn, grow, socialize and care for one another. The Sarasota City YMCA offers childcare for children while their parents utilize the facility. Specialized neurocycling classes are available for individuals that have balance or movement issues. Adult and youth sports leagues are ramping up, and no one does camp like the YMCA! Camp, by the way, isn’t just for summer. The Y offers camp during school breaks such as Thanksgiving, winter, and spring break. Teens that are interested in acquiring skills that lead to their first employment opportunity can be trained as lifeguards and camp counselors. Individuals hoping to get some pre or post-surgical exercises can choose from many options at the Y. Active older adults can choose from a variety of activities that address their particular needs and interests. Because safety around water is incredibly important living in Florida, the Y offers swim programs for all ages. When hurricanes hit, The Y opens its doors to the community for showers, charging of devices and respite. Research also suggests that volunteering is a great way to not only engage the brain to keep individuals mentally sharp but it also reduces feelings of isolation which are beneficial to overall health. As a nonprofit organization, the YMCA offers many volunteer opportunities! If you are interested in learning more about the Sarasota City YMCA, drop in for a tour or join us for a night of luck and luxury filled with classic casino games, signature cocktails and light fare. The evening's intermission will feature a paddle raise in support of the vital programs and scholarships offered at the YMCA. Dress to impress and prepare for a night of fun and philanthropy! This event is being held at The Ora Premier Event Venue and is for guests over age 21. Mark your calendar for Saturday, January 31, 2026 and come prepared to go ALL IN for an inspirational cause!
