“Schoolbirds”: The Scott Family

Megan Scott told her parents at an early age, “I can’t help that I was born in the wrong location!”. Maine was nice, but she always dreamed of moving to a big city one day, or maybe even somewhere warm.

Eventually, those dreams led her right here to Sarasota—the perfect spot. She and her husband, Corey, lead a fun and flexible lifestyle which allows for both hard work from home and play from afar. She calls herself a “Schoolbird”. When school isn’t in session for the kids here in Sarasota, you can find her with her family near Portland, on Sebago Lake, where they’ve kept their charming house on the water. It’s the perfect place to escape the summer heat and catch up with loved ones.

She and Corey grew up in different parts of Maine and both attended the University of Maine, where she majored in Romance Languages and minored in Business. Corey also studied Business. They became acquainted through her college roommate, his old high school friend. Megan and Corey were close friends throughout those college years, until one day when they decided to give dating a try. Obviously, that was a good idea and went rather well. Portland was the nearest big city in Maine, and Megan decided to join Corey there after college.  Around 2009, Corey started dabbling in real estate, and soon realized it wasn’t for him. He convinced Megan to do the selling instead, and he’d do the financing. They married in 2012 and continued working as a husband-and wife team, in that fashion, for several years. Once they had their second daughter, they realized that it surely wasn’t possible for both to work all hours of the days and nights. Megan decided to then join Corey in his mortgage business. Together, they still successfully run that company today, serving New England and several states along the eastern seaboard, including Florida. Most of their workdays are spent hustling from home, sometimes sneaking over to Kahwa or Hashtag Café during breaks. They do keep local office space and venture to Maine for periodic meetings with their team, as well.

Sarasota first came up on the map when the two purchased a property here back in 2018. They went under contract for the spot on Siesta Key, sight unseen, without ever visiting Sarasota! It wasn’t a mistake, by any means. Each time they’d come down to visit the property, they thought: Why are we leaving?  As unfortunate as the pandemic was, all in all, it opened a lot of possibilities for the couple when their entire business moved to an online model. Nobody met in person, nobody went to closings, and their employees all transitioned to remote roles. It still worked. With their kids being just 5 and 7 at the time, they took the “now or never” leap with a full time move to their beautiful home on Citrus Avenue about 3 years ago. Although the market has changed over the last several years, they also love real estate investing, purchasing and renovating other properties. They still have a weekly rental on Siesta and a monthly rental in the Waterside region.

Daughters, Adrianna nd Mila are now 10 and 8 years old, respectively. Adrianna finds so much joy in dancing! She dances 4-5 days out of the week at Soul Studios, with her favorite class being Contemporary or Improv. Mila, on the other hand, is enjoying learning tennis, and is excited to start basketball soon, with Dad serving as a coach. She always has some sort of musical activity going on as well, like piano lessons, music compound, or Florida Studio Theater. The girls also love to walk around downtown searching for tiny doors. These are whimsical art installations, usually at street level, which depict fairy doors, bringing joy and wonder to kids and adults of all ages. Made of a variety of materials, they were sprinkled around the city by local artist, Joan Love in 2018. Adrianna and Mila have had a lot of fun finding them, and still occasionally find a new one that they’ve never discovered before! They look forward to a special tradition each Sunday, “Reading Night”. Mom says, “In effort to wind down and reconnect after active weekends, we try to make a fire and read before bed on Sundays. We have a lovely balcony that is the perfect spot for it - especially during the slightly chilly nights during fall and winter seasons.”

“We all love to be active with friends. Corey and I play a lot of pickleball and are happy to be members at Dill Dinkers, which enables us to play indoors. We love to play Cribbage and have found it so interesting that not many of our friends from around here even know what the game is. Our Maine friends always play with us when our families get together. We also have a fondness for Siesta, since that's where our vacations happened and our love for the area began.  We love the ability to go over there for a quick stop to catch the sunset, or sometimes, for a short morning trip”, Megan explained. As “blessed to be Boston fans”, they also enjoy having friends over to watch the Celtics and the Patriots play.

Now that they live in sunny Sarasota, Megan has found fun in choosing trips that aren't just heading to the beach. “We have started the tradition of traveling somewhere new for Thanksgiving, and then back to Maine for winter break. We loved our trip to Paris two years ago. This past year we did San Diego and LA. We are still debating where this year's Thanksgiving break will take us!”

Having come from a rural state, the Scotts love the convenience of having so many amenities within a few minutes of their home. Megan enjoys Pilates at Bodybar’s downtown studio several mornings per week. Corey enjoys training at Body Reform in Burns Court. The family occasionally bikes to Morton's for an early morning treat, and then on to school. Corey’s favorite part of Southside is the vast array of nearby grocery options. He loves spoiling the family with fresh sourdough and croissants from Bread Bandits. The variety of opportunities Sarasota provides to experience art and music are also appreciated. They enjoy catching shows at Van Wezel and the children's theater at Florida Studio Theater, the local circus, or even the performances from the talented students at Southside. It is great to see live music at the walkable O’Leary’s, of course. On weekends when they’re not away at dance competitions, they are busy checking out never-had-before breakfast spots. This isn’t a difficult challenge, considering all the many delicious options available!

Whether you see the Scotts out at a Southside restaurant enjoying pancakes or having a cozy night on their balcony, be sure to wave hello and make an introduction! Our team at Stroll is so excited to welcome them as part of our growing neighborhood.
