Meet Dr. Mauricio Concha

The Neurologist Bringing Science, Compassion, and Hope to Sarasota

In neurology, time can mean everything. In stroke care, seconds save lives. In memory care, time unfolds differently—slowly, and often without clear answers. Few physicians understand both ends of that spectrum as deeply as Dr. Mauricio Concha.

With a résumé that spans elite research institutions, academic medicine, and hospital leadership, Dr. Concha’s credentials are impressive by any standard. Yet what truly sets him apart is not his titles, but the heart behind his work.

Born in Colombia, Dr. Concha’s path to medicine in the United States began through the National Institutes of Health, where he conducted research in the epidemiology of retroviruses. His early work caught national attention and earned him a prestigious scholarship to Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health, where he completed a master’s in health science and fellowship in Neuroepidemiology—a discipline that bridges large-scale research with individual patient outcomes.

He later completed additional fellowship training in Dementia and Cerebrovascular Diseases, a rare combination that would shape the dual focus of his career: urgent, life-saving stroke care and the long, complex journey of cognitive disease.

Following his training, Dr. Concha remained teaching in academia at the University of Miami, mentoring future physicians and contributing to advances in neurological care. Eventually, a trusted friend and colleague would lead him to Sarasota, where his expertise would leave a lasting mark.

Building a Stroke Program and a Community Standard
Upon arriving in Sarasota, Dr. Concha played a pivotal role in launching the Stroke Program at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, helping build systems designed to deliver rapid, evidence-based care when every moment matters. Today, he continues to serve as Medical Director of Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s Comprehensive Stroke Center, overseeing coordinated teams that guide patients from crisis through recovery.

But stroke care is only part of his story.

Memory Care with a Forward-Looking Lens
While stroke demands immediacy, memory disorders require something else entirely: patience, and a long view ahead. Dr. Concha brings that perspective to Sarasota in his role as the Director and Founder of The Memory Care Clinic and The Research Clinic within Intercoastal Medical Group (IMG).

At the IMG Memory Care Clinic, patients benefit from a comprehensive program that goes far beyond the office visit. Advanced diagnostic tools and a personalized approach are paired with access to the latest treatment advancements and carefully selected clinical trials. Equally important, families are supported with wide array of access to education, care planning, and resources that extend into daily life, recognizing that Alzheimer’s and related disorders affect entire households, not just individuals. This breadth of care reflects Dr. Concha’s unique training, and his philosophy that medicine must meet patients where they are, clinically and emotionally. For Dr. Concha, this work is deeply personal. His father, a tremendously successful businessman, lived with Alzheimer’s disease for more than ten years. Dr. Concha witnessed firsthand the gradual erosion of memory, independence, and identity—and the emotional toll it took on his family. That experience reshaped his understanding of what patients and caregivers truly need: not just diagnoses, but guidance, dignity, and hope. Over the past six years, he has dedicated his passion to expanding clinical trial access for patients with Alzheimer’s disease, particularly those who previously had no treatment options. For many families, these trials represent more than research. They represent possibility.

Redefining Hope in Neurology
What was once a diagnosis defined solely by decline is now met, in Dr. Concha’s care, with forward momentum. Through research-driven medicine, innovative therapies, and compassionate communication, he ensures patients feel seen as people, not conditions, and families feel supported rather than abandoned. Despite his many leadership roles, those who know Dr. Concha best describe him as a physician who listens, who stays relentlessly current so his patients don’t have to navigate uncertainty alone, and who believes that medicine is as much about heart as it is about knowledge. In every role he holds, Dr. Mauricio Concha exemplifies what modern neurology strives to be: scientifically advanced, deeply human, and unwaveringly hopeful.
