Finding Joy in Simplicity
Michael Johnson’s passionate work with The Haven
Nestled within 32 lush acres in Sarasota, Florida The Haven stands as a sanctuary for individuals with disabilities, offering essential programs and services that enrich lives and foster independence. This vibrant nonprofit community empowers children and adults alike, creating a nurturing environment where everyone is encouraged to pursue their dreams, embrace their rights and live their lives to the fullest. For Michael Johnson, a dedicated volunteer, The Haven represents more than just a charitable commitment- it is a place of learning, growth and deep inspiration.
Michael first got involved with The Haven over a year ago, committing to volunteer around twice a month. It didn’t take long for him to realize that spending time with the residents was more than just an act of service; It was a profound reminder of the beauty in life's simple moments. "Every time I’m here I feel this overwhelming sense of joy and gratitude," Michael says. "The residents have this incredible way of showing me that life is truly about finding happiness in the most basic yet powerful ways." Whether they are engaging in arts and crafts, enjoying a walk around the grounds or sharing stories, Michael finds himself inspired by the resilience and purity he witnesses.
Volunteering at The Haven has changed Michael’s perspective, encouraging him to focus on what truly matters. "Spending time here lets me see life through a resident's eyes" he reflects. Their joy is genuine and uncomplicated. "It reminds me that no matter the circumstances, happiness is always within reach."
Michael's involvement doesn’t end with his own volunteer work- he has become a vocal advocate for the Haven in his community, urging friends and family to experience its unique impact for themselves. "I tell everyone I know to come see what this place is about and lend a hand" he says. "The joy and gratitude you feel in volunteering here are truly unmatched,"
Those looking to get involved with the Haven can reach out to Don Herndon, Director of Mission Services. He can assist with coordinating volunteer efforts and welcomes anyone eager to make a difference. Michael particularly enjoys attending a weekly program Don hosts called REACH (Recreation, Education, Advocacy, Community, Health) which teaches valuable lessons about various life issues. Some subjects of discussion are on topics of communication, fire drills, the U.S. Constitution, the history of upcoming holidays, and more!
For those who wish to support the Haven in a more celebratory setting, the organization's annual Gala will be held on February 22 at The Ora. The event promises to be a night of joy and camaraderie with proceeds supporting the Haven‘s programs. Tickets for the Gala are available at the Haven‘s website, thehavensrq.org where supporters can learn more about the impactful work of this beloved Sarasota organization. Through his volunteer work. Michael has come to see The Haven as not only as a place of safety and independence, but as a source of inspiration- a reminder to embrace joy and kindness every day. For those looking to experience this transformative sense of purpose, The Haven opens its arms wide, ready to welcome new friends into its extraordinary community.
