Teen Court creates a second chance for young people

Teens help teens to make healthy choices through meaningful consequences, peer mentorship and civic engagement.

I originally came to Teen Court looking for an education on the local Judicial system.  I had heard one of my close friends telling me about how wonderful the program was so I decided to give it a shot. Previous to Teen Court I had some of a grasp on the Courthouse process because my dad is an Attorney and I had done some law-based internships, but none of them gave me an education quite like Teen Court did. I remember the first time I walked into one of our courtrooms and I was stunned. An actual court scenario being ran by people my age was unheard of and I was excited to see where this could take me, and from there on I was hooked. From there  on I was able to try all sorts of different roles within the program: Jury, Clerk, Bailiff, and Attorney. I decided on becoming a Teen Attorney because for me that’s where I really could make a difference in someone’s life. Its so powerful being up on stand, defending a member of my community, and giving them a second chance. Not only is giving back to my community been such an important part of my Teen Court journey, but being able to be apart of Teen Courts wonderful community has been just as impactful. The amazing role models this program offers is a reason to try it out on its own, along with the friends you will make. I can assertively say that I’ve made some lifetime bonds with the other attorneys in this program, and seeing some of my friends being showcased at the annual Scholarship Dinner has been one of my fondest memories.   Teen Court honestly has been the best experience I’ve had throughout high school. Its reinsured my passion for law and its provided me so much information on the topic. It’s also taught me important life skills like peer advocacy and leadership, which I can utilize in nearly every aspect of my life. Its also extremely improved my public speaking skills. But most importantly its taught me the importance of a second chance. So many peoples lives have been positively turned around from this program, and I believe its helped me become a mentor for those who may need it, and a positive role model. My best advice is to come and try Teen Court, its absolutely worth it and you never know how it could change your life for the better.
