Cooking for the Arts - A Sold-Out Success for Southside Elementary
Bringing the Community Together to Support the Next Generation of Artists

Chairs Ethan & Molly Biter, Sepi & Ryan Ackerman
Southside School Foundation for the Arts (SSFA) hosted its third annual Cooking for the Arts event, welcoming 250 guests to a sold-out evening of culinary creativity and community spirit at Michael’s On East.
This year’s theme— “Checkmate: The Art of the Game”—transformed the ballroom into a black-and-white chess-inspired masterpiece, complete with oversized chess pieces, checkered patterns, and playful entertainment. The event was co-chaired by West of Trail neighbors Sepi and Ryan Ackerman and Molly and Ethan Biter.
Thank you to our first ever Presenting Sponsor + Captain of the Arts Sponsor, Dr. Jose + Emily Pizarro! Our Benefactor Sponsor, Dr. John Didovic + Melissa Zolmierski. And our Champion of the Arts Sponsors, Patron of the Arts Sponsors, Stella Rose Events, Michael’s on East and all who donated to make this evening so successful!
Sepi, who many know as our own Making a Difference writer, has a long history of giving back to the community, and her leadership with SSFA is yet another example of her passion for supporting local students and the arts.
"I am beyond grateful for the incredible community support that made cooking for arts a sold-out success. The generosity and passion both from committee members and attendees are unmatched. All these 'ingredients' are what come together to make arts for Southside possible"
Guests enjoyed a hands-on culinary experience, preparing gourmet dishes tableside under the guidance of renowned local chefs Phil Mancini and Jamil Pineda. The evening also featured lively entertainment—from stilt walkers to hula hoopers—and a spirited live auction led by local comedy legend Les McCurdy.
Proceeds directly benefit arts programs at Southside Elementary, funding initiatives like dance and theater curriculum enhancements, after school workshops with Sarasota Opera and Asolo Rep, and hands-on costume design programs. Thanks to Sepi, her fellow co-chairs, and the generous support of sponsors and guests, Cooking for the Arts continues to make a lasting impact on Southside students.
