From the Capital to the Coast: Jackie and Chuck’s New Chapter
Washington, DC
For Jacquelyn “Jackie” DeMesme and Charles “Chuck” Gray, the move to Westbrook marked the beginning of a new chapter—one shaped by reflection, connection, and a deep appreciation for life’s quieter moments. After spending their entire lives in Washington, D.C., and traveling all over the world, they relocated nearly three years ago in search of better weather, a slower pace, and a lifestyle that allowed space for both community and contemplation. What they found was far more than a change of scenery; they found a place that truly feels like home.
Their days often begin outdoors, coffee in hand, watching a familiar family of six ducks glide through the lagoon behind their home. Though not pets in the traditional sense, the ducks have become a beloved part of their morning ritual—a simple joy that reflects how fully Jackie and Chuck have embraced their surroundings. Weekends are spent exploring museums, antique shops, and new restaurants, or simply enjoying time near the water, soaking in the natural beauty that first drew them to the area.
Both Jackie and Chuck bring a sense of curiosity and purpose to retirement. Jackie loves reading, traveling, and sharing meals with friends and family, while Chuck enjoys golf, woodworking, and gardening. Staying connected to the community is equally important. Chuck is a member of the Heritage Golf Club, and Jackie is actively involved with Women of Westbrook. Together, they participate in neighborhood gatherings, parish events at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, and happily welcome visits from their grandchildren from Atlanta—always eager to share the life they’ve built here.
While retired from their professional careers, Jackie remains deeply engaged in work that is central to her faith and identity. She serves as a member of the global Executive Committee of the Cursillo Movement, representing North America. Cursillo is a transformative three-day Catholic retreat experience focused on spiritual renewal, friendship, and bringing Christian values into everyday life. Rooted in community and reflection, the movement has touched lives across the world—and Jackie has been privileged to help guide its mission on an international level.
Her role has taken her across the globe, including multiple trips to Rome where she met Pope Francis and Pope Leo at the Vatican, as well as visits to Mallorca, the birthplace of Cursillo. In the coming year, she will travel to South Africa, Barbados, and Argentina, continuing her work of connection and service on behalf of the movement.
Family remains the heart of everything Jackie and Chuck do. Leaving behind Jackie’s four sisters in Washington, D.C. was not easy, but the move brought them closer to their three grandchildren—each pursuing meaningful, service-driven paths of their own. Despite the distance, Jackie has found creative ways to keep family traditions alive, from hosting a Zoom “Easter Hat Parade” with her sisters to organizing a New Year’s Eve gathering that introduced neighbors to extended family, blending old roots with new friendships.
At the center of Jackie and Chuck’s life in Westbrook is a genuine love for community. They cherish the friendships they’ve formed, the shared moments at neighborhood gatherings and parish events, and the simple joy of feeling connected—to each other, to their neighbors, and to something larger than themselves. Grateful for this season of life and the place they now call home, Jackie and Chuck continue to lead with openness, generosity, and a deep appreciation for every day.
