Westbrook Roots, Demon Deacon Spirit: April Moss
For Westbrook resident April Moss, cheerleading is more than a sport—it’s a passion that has shaped her confidence, commitment, and college experience. With roots in Savannah and a decade spent in Westbrook, April’s athletic journey reflects years of hard work, encouragement, and a genuine love for cheering on her team.
Originally from Savannah, April has lived in Westbrook for the past 10 years. She was first introduced to cheerleading by following in the footsteps of her older sister, Rose, who cheered throughout middle and high school. Inspired by watching her sister perform, April began taking tumbling classes in fifth grade and joined an Effingham County Recreation Department cheer team. From there, her love for the sport only grew.
April went on to earn spots on both the Effingham County Middle School and Effingham County High School Competition Teams, where she truly fell in love with competitive cheerleading. Her dedication and growth eventually led her to the collegiate level, where she now cheers at Wake Forest University for the Demon Deacons’ football, basketball, and volleyball teams.
One of April’s most memorable moments this season came during Wake Forest’s thrilling 13–12 football victory over SMU. With just six seconds left on the clock, Wake Forest secured the win with a dramatic 50-yard field goal. April vividly recalls standing behind the end zone, watching the ball barely clear the goalposts—a moment filled with shock, excitement, and pure adrenaline.
Throughout her athletic journey, April credits her biggest inspiration to her mother, Aurelia Moss. Despite cheering since fifth grade, April once doubted she was skilled enough to compete at the Division I level. Her mother encouraged her to step outside her comfort zone and try out—advice that led April to become a four-year member of the Wake Forest cheerleading team. One of her mother’s guiding phrases, “Do your best and God will take care of the rest,” continues to shape how April approaches both athletics and life.
April also shares thoughtful advice for fellow athletes in the neighborhood: don’t be afraid to take a break if burnout sets in. During her junior year of college, April studied abroad and stepped away from cheerleading for a semester. When she returned, she found a renewed passion and appreciation for the sport that has carried her through her senior year.
Outside of cheerleading, April enjoys photography, traveling, college football, and spending quality time with her family. As she approaches graduation, she is focused on savoring every remaining moment cheering for the Demon Deacons.
With her dedication, positivity, and team spirit, April Moss is a wonderful example of athletic commitment and community pride. Westbrook is proud to cheer her on as she finishes this exciting chapter of her cheerleading journey.
