Dolce and Dunkin Donut: Proof That Love Extends Life

Life in the neighborhood has been a great fit for Michelle Thyfault-Haynes and her family since moving here in October of 2022—but the real star of their household arrived earlier. Her name is Dolce, and her story is one of resilience, sweetness, and second chances.
Meet Dolce, a seven-year-old rescue affectionately described as a pippet—part pit bull, part whippet, and entirely unforgettable.
Dolce’s start in life was anything but easy. Born with a severe heart defect, she wasn’t expected to live past her first year. In addition to her heart condition, Dolce faces a collection of challenges including anxiety, alopecia, allergies, “happy tail,” and diagnosed mental limitations. But when faced with a grim prognosis, Michelle made a simple but powerful decision: if Dolce only had a year, it would be the best year possible.
Seven birthdays later, Dolce is still proving everyone wrong.
A Rescue That Changed Everything
Dolce came into Michelle’s life after an employee shared that her boyfriend’s pit bull had a puppy with a heart murmur—and that euthanasia was being considered. Knowing Michelle’s soft spot for animals in need, the employee reached out. Michelle didn’t hesitate.
She adopted Dolce on the spot, and from that moment on, Dolce became a permanent—and beloved—part of the family.
As for her unique lineage, Dolce’s mother was a blue nose pit bull. The whippet father, apparently, was both mysterious and courageous. As Michelle puts it, “Clearly, the whippet who jumped that fence was a very brave male.”
Sweet by Name, Sweet by Nature
Dolce’s name suits her perfectly. While it was briefly a toss-up between Dolce and Dufus, the sweeter option won out. True to her name, Dolce is the gentlest, most loving dog her family has ever known. She loves everyone and everything—even if the feeling isn’t always mutual.
Most dogs aren’t quite sure what to make of Dolce, sensing that she’s a little “off” (which Michelle freely admits she is). Still, a few kind neighborhood pups—Chuck, Callie, Tugboat, and Keystone—are happy to let her say hello, and that’s more than enough for Dolce.
The Support Animal Who Happens to Be a Cat
One of Dolce’s most unique traits is that she has her own emotional support animal: Dunkin Donut, a rescue cat who is as smart as Dolce is delightfully dingy. The two are inseparable, and Dunkin has played a huge role in helping manage Dolce’s anxiety.
When the family leaves the house, Dolce rests in her kennel with a sound machine to help keep her calm. More often than not, when they return home, they find Dunkin Donut right there with her—either curled up nearby or keeping watch just outside the kennel. The sight never gets old.
Simple Joys and Sweet Treats
Dolce may not know any tricks (not even one), but she knows what she loves. Her favorite treats include dried sweet potatoes and yak cheese, and she’s always up for a walk or a leisurely golf cart ride around the neighborhood.
While she doesn’t frequent local parks or businesses—she’s a bit too wacky for public outings—Dolce is perfectly content soaking up love at home and enjoying life at her own pace.
A Life Well Loved
Dolce’s story isn’t about perfection or talent—it’s about resilience, kindness, and unconditional love. She may have started life with every odd stacked against her, but thanks to Michelle’s compassion and a lot of heart, Dolce continues to thrive.
And really, what could be sweeter than that?
