Atticus Finch: A Small Dog with a Big Heart
When Julie and James Lawson built their “retirement home” on Harvest Hill in Savannah Quarters in May 2022, they dreamed of a place to relax, connect, and enjoy life together. What they found was more than a home—it was a neighborhood that quickly became a community. From the monthly Harvest Hill Happy Hours to spontaneous visits with neighbors, they discovered a warmth and camaraderie that made every day brighter.
Sharing their home and hearts is Atticus Finch, a spirited Dorkie—a dachshund/Yorkie mix—who will turn 11 on March 9. Dorkies are known for their energy, playfulness, and loyalty, and Atticus embodies every bit of it. His boundless enthusiasm, particularly for visitors, makes him the heart and soul of the Lawson household.
Atticus’s journey to the Lawsons began in 2016. He originally belonged to a former neighbor’s elderly mother, who quickly realized that his energy was a little too much to handle. When Julie and James agreed to a “meet and greet” with their dog Thomas, Atticus arrived with all of his belongings—food, toys, crates, and health records—turning what was meant to be a visit into a permanent place in their family. After a period of adjustment, the two dogs became companions, and when Thomas later developed cancer, Atticus provided comfort and joy during a difficult time.
His name, Atticus Finch, was already part of his story, and the Lawsons happily kept it. To Kill a Mockingbird is a family favorite, and the morally upright hero’s name felt perfectly suited to a dog with such charm, loyalty, and integrity.
One of Atticus’s most endearing features is his right ear, which often stands up or flops to the side—a quirk that draws compliments and makes him instantly lovable. Even at nearly eleven, Atticus is still playful, energetic, and happy, whether he’s chasing squeaky toys, teasing his humans by keeping them running after him, or enjoying his favorite treat—bananas. He’s also become a skilled lizard hunter, proving that age hasn’t dimmed his adventurous spirit.
Atticus has shared countless memories with Julie and James, but one stands above all. In early May, James had become very sick, but during a brief rally during illness, Julie and James enjoyed a visit with their daughter, her partner, and their first grandchild, Alice Ann. Atticus sat patiently on James’s lap as the family laughed, cried, and savored the precious time with family. James passed away two days later, making that evening—a blend of joy, love, and quiet presence—an irreplaceable memory that Julie will always cherish.
Today, Atticus enjoys leisurely walks along Harvest Hill, taking in the scents, sights, and friendly faces of his neighborhood. While he’s more selective with other dogs these days, he has a special “girlfriend” next door—Lily, featured in the December issue of Stroll—and the two are always delighted to reunite during neighborhood gatherings. Atticus also loves car rides, whether to the Savannah Quarters dog park or to Starbucks for a “Pup Cup,” a treat that was one of James’ favorite traditions with him.
With his floppy ear, big personality, and unwavering loyalty, Atticus Finch is more than a pet—he’s a beloved family member, a source of joy, and a small dog who has left a lasting mark on Harvest Hill.
