Beyond Cartwheels: The Heart Behind Riverfront Gymnastics
For Jill Gray, gymnastics has always been about much more than learning how to tumble, flip or stick a landing. As the owner of Riverfront Gymnastics Center, she has built her business around the belief that movement can help children develop something even more important: confidence, resilience and the skills to navigate life both inside and outside the gym.
Located in the Pooler area, Riverfront Gymnastics serves children ages 18 months and up with recreational gymnastics classes designed to support physical, social and emotional development. The goal is to create a safe, encouraging environment where children can learn at their own pace, celebrate their accomplishments and develop a positive relationship with movement.
The philosophy is simple: every child has room to grow.
“While many gyms focus solely on skills and progression, we also prioritize building confidence, resilience, coordination, and social development in every child,” Jill explains. “We are more than just a gymnastics facility—we are a child-centered community focused on whole-child growth.”
That approach is reflected in the gym’s programming, which extends well beyond weekly gymnastics classes. Riverfront offers birthday parties, Parent’s Night Out events, specialty clinics, private lessons, tumbling programs and seasonal camps, giving families opportunities to stay active and connected throughout the year.
Jill’s own history with gymnastics makes the mission especially personal. A true Effingham/Chatham native, she grew up in Rincon and began gymnastics at an early age, eventually becoming a competitive gymnast. The sport taught her lessons in discipline, confidence and resilience that stayed with her long after her competitive days ended.
She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Human Performance & Fitness Management, providing a foundation for combining her interests in athletics, child development and leadership. After spending five years in Jacksonville, Jill returned home to Georgia and opened Riverfront Gymnastics—a decision she considers one of the greatest achievements of her life, alongside becoming a mom.
Today, she and her husband, Aaron, are raising their toddler, Oakley, while Jill continues to grow the business she built in the community she has always called home.
“I feel incredibly blessed to be married to my husband, Aaron, and to be raising our toddler, Oakley, who has brought so much joy and purpose to our lives,” she says. “Building a business rooted in community, movement, and confidence for children while doing it in the place I’ve always called home has made this journey especially rewarding.”
Riverfront’s growth has been fueled in large part by its dedicated team. Staff members come from a wide range of backgrounds, including gymnastics, dance, athletic training, childcare, education, customer service and business. Some work at the gym full-time, while others balance their Riverfront roles with careers outside the facility, but Jill says they are united by a shared passion for the gym’s mission and the children and families they serve.
That diverse experience helps create an environment that is both professional and personal. Through staff training, family communication and individualized progression tracking, Riverfront strives to ensure that each child receives the support they need to succeed.
The 3,600-square-foot facility currently hosts more than 50 classes each week, in addition to its specialty programs, private lessons, camps and family-centered events. While Jill is proud of how far Riverfront has come, she remains open to future growth if the right opportunity arises.
For local families considering gymnastics, Jill’s advice is straightforward: give children the opportunity to try.
“Never underestimate the value of movement and giving children opportunities to try new things,” she says. “Sometimes one class is all it takes for a child to find a new passion, build friendships, and grow in ways that go far beyond the gym floor.”
That philosophy captures the heart of Riverfront Gymnastics. The goal isn't simply to teach a child how to master a new skill. It is to give them a place where they can try, stumble, try again and ultimately discover what they are capable of.
For Jill, that is the real measure of success—and the reason she is so passionate about building a gym that feels like an important part of the community she calls home.
