Q&A with Kim Milam

What inspired you to become an interior designer?
After working with a Dallas designer on two of my own homes, the industry became appealing to me. So much so, I decided to go back to school again at 34, with a 2 year old at home, and enroll in TCU’s interior design program.

How would you describe your design style, and how do you tailor it to fit each client’s unique vision?
Every designer has a “hand” that you can see if you try. My objective however, is to show a wide variety of styles and listen carefully to my clients and to create the very best version of what they love.

What are some of the latest trends you’re excited about in interior design?
I don’t pay a lot of attention to trends. Design is expensive and my goal is to curate a space that when viewing you don’t know if it was done last year or ten years ago. I’ve owned a Donghia chair and ottoman for more than 30 years that looks like I just acquired it last year. Those are the items you can’t believe you spent that much, but then it’s so worth it. I have many personal pieces of which I’ve never tired, and that’s the goal I have for my clients as well.

Do you have a favorite project or space you’ve designed? What made it special?
Any project where the client trusts fully in the process. It ALWAYS turns out better when I’m allowed to do what I do best. Changing one piece of the puzzle can change everything, so keep the faith!

What services do you offer that set you apart from other designers in the area?
Once the overall design is approved and all fabrics and finishes have been decided, the client is provided a line itemed budget for approval. No later surprises or confusion about the scope of work.
