Dave's STL K-9 Dog Trainers, located just down the road in Ballwin, pride themselves on being "Balanced Trainers" when it comes to dog obedience. With a philosophy rooted in understanding the individuality of each dog, they employ both positive and negative reinforcement techniques to tailor their approach to the unique needs of every canine companion.
The key to their success lies in acknowledging that not all dogs respond to the same training methods. Dave's STL K-9 recognizes that all dogs are different and each one is special. They don't use the same amount of praise on a high-energy Border Collie as they do on a low-energy Basset Hound. In the same way, they don’t use the same correction on a submissive dog as they do on a more dominant type of dog.
Founder Dave brings a wealth of experience to the table, having started as an evaluator for Support Dogs Touch Team where they determine if a dog has the capability of being a therapy dog. From there he went to Casy Ray K-9 Dog trainers School where he was taught a balanced training approach and completed both written exams and actual hands on training. He worked there for six years before Casey Ray closed his locations, and Dave decided it was time to open up a business of his own.
Dave is not only an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator but also an AKC Temperament Evaluator. He loves working with dogs and teaching owners how to train their dogs but also how to reinforce what the dog has learned. He’s been married for 42 years and lives in Ballwin. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, going to the gym, training and playing with his dog.
Dave's STL K-9 takes dogs through three essential stages of training:
- The Learning Stage, where positive reinforcement prevails.
- The Correctional Stage, introduces negative reinforcement when necessary.
- The Proofing Stage, where learned skills are cemented and maintained.
This structured approach, combined with a variety of training tools, ensures success in obedience training. Their range of services includes basic and advanced obedience, group classes, canine good citizen classes and tests, day trains, individual private lessons and treadmill training. - Intro to Agility - This will introduce you and your dog to agility obstacles like an A-frame, weave poles, a catwalk, a teeter-totter and several different jumps. This is a great introduction to those who are interested in exploring agility.
- Intro To Rally - This course introduces you and your dog to the basic positions, meanings, signs and how to navigate through the courses.
