Mountain Memories: The Andersons’ Colorado Adventure
A spring break filled with skiing, sleigh rides, and a few unexpected turns brought lasting memories for Emily, Avery, and Jake Anderson in Colorado.
This spring break, Emily Anderson and her two kids, Avery (9) and Jake (7), took a trip to Colorado while dad Trevor and baby sister August stayed home here in The Highlands subdivision. After flying into Denver, they drove two hours to Keystone’s River Run Village, where they checked into their condo and got ready for a week of fun in the mountains.
The Andersons spent their days skiing the slopes of Keystone, where Avery and Jake showed off their progress since last year’s trip. “They were rockstars,” Emily shared. “They just didn’t want to stop!” One of the most memorable nights included a horse-drawn sleigh ride through Soda Creek Valley. With fun-loving wranglers leading the way, the family stopped halfway for a hearty cowboy-style steak dinner under the stars—an experience they’ll never forget.
In nearby Frisco, the family had a blast tubing, laughing all the way down the snow-packed hills. It was a throwback to Emily’s own childhood, as she grew up skiing and visiting Keystone with her family. “I have such wonderful memories of these trips, and I want my kids to have the same,” she said. This was their second spring break in Keystone, and they’re already dreaming of returning.
Not everything went according to plan, though. On their last run of the trip, Jake took a bad fall just minutes from the base. Ski patrol was called, and he was transported by toboggan to the medical center, where they learned he had a significant leg break requiring a full cast. Despite the scare, Emily was blown away by her children’s resilience and thankful for the kindness of strangers, including a helpful mom who reunited her with Avery during the confusion.
Her advice to future travelers? “Hydrate constantly—altitude sickness is real,” she warned. “And make sure everyone has a way to communicate. A smartwatch or walkie talkie can make all the difference.”
Broken bones aside, the Andersons made incredible memories—and are already planning their next trip back to the mountains!
