The Farrells Take on Spain
A once-in-a-lifetime soccer camp, coastal escapes, and plenty of family memories made this European getaway unforgettable.
The Farrell Family
This past spring, the Farrell family packed their bags for an unforgettable two-week adventure in Spain, a trip inspired by nine-year-old Nolan’s invitation to attend the Real Madrid Foundation Training Camp.
The journey began in Madrid, where Nolan spent ten days training with kids from across the U.S. on Team Mbappé. He lived in a hostel alongside teammates, and together they trained at both the Real Madrid and Las Rozas facilities, toured historic sites, played matches against local clubs, and even sat first row at a Real Madrid game, a dream come true for the young soccer fan!
While Nolan worked hard on the field, his mom, Colleen, was joined by her parents, Tom and Linda, along with Nolan’s little brother Patrick (3). They stayed in a Gran Vía apartment, close enough to cheer Nolan on while also exploring Madrid’s bustling neighborhoods, savoring incredible meals, and soaking up the city’s rich history.
The family adventure grew when dad, Matt, and sister, Elle (7), arrived for the second week. Together, they boarded the high-speed train south to Marbella, where they stayed in a house just blocks from the beach. Despite some rainy weather, the covered pool and game room kept the kids entertained, and sunny breaks were spent strolling the boardwalk, exploring old town Marbella, and enjoying plenty of beachside soccer. The family especially loved dining at Playa Nini Beach Restaurant and Alabardero Beach Club and capped the trip with a private catered dinner by EME de Miguel—a delicious finale to their Spanish getaway.
The Farrells also managed a side trip to Gibraltar, where they climbed the Rock, wandered through caves, greeted the famous monkeys, and took in the beautiful views stretching across the sea to Morocco.
Though the return home was unexpectedly delayed by Heathrow airport fires, a surprise stop in Lisbon turned into a birthday to remember for Colleen, thanks to thoughtful gestures from both hotel staff and airline crew.
Madrid wowed the Farrells with its culture, energy, and food, and Marbella offered the perfect family-friendly escape.
Their advice to future travelers? Choose flexible lodging, embrace Spain’s late-night schedule, and don’t miss the train ride (it’s fast, easy, and fun for the kids).
