Laila Mirsepasi

I started playing basketball when I moved to Texas from Seattle, Washington, at age 7. I joined a team at Prestonwood and fell in love with the game. The hard work you put in being visible on the court is one of the things I enjoy most about the game. I truly enjoy working hard when nobody is watching, playing with my headphones in, listening to my favorite tunes. One highlight of my experience was making the playoffs my freshman year. I started that playoff game. It was amazing. On the court, I had the highlight of making a game-tying 3-pointer in a game against Plano East. The ecstatic feeling inside grew as all my teammates ran up to me, excited.

My favorite moment of basketball to me came off the court, when, during my freshman year of basketball, we, as a team, took a trip down to Austin. We played a tournament, but the moments I remember the most came off the court. We stayed in an Airbnb. We ate together, played Fortnite together, had late-night pillow fights, and talked. Those moments make up my favorite moments of basketball.

I admire not one person in themselves, but anyone who goes against the norm, standing up for what they believe in. I admire the dedicated, the determined, and the resilient. I am motivated by way-makers, path-creators, and mountain-movers. One name that comes to mind is Greg Mortenson, who built schools in Pakistani villages for girls.

Basketball has been my outlet. No matter where I look, basketball is there. Even after I tore my shoulder and I got surgery on it, basketball has still been here. My journey has not been a straight path, but if it were, I wouldn't have learned anything. Everything happens for a reason, God is in control of it all, and I am so better for it now. Basketball is my passion, and I am excited to see what my future entails.

As an adult, I want to create a lasting impact on people's lives. I want to inspire people and be happy. My plans after high school include excelling in college, both academically and athletically. I want to win a national championship. Beyond that, I want to help people first and foremost
