TBG Martial Arts
TBG Martial Arts specializes in Taekwondo and self-defense. It was founded and is operated by Lillian and Rebecca Owings, a mother-daughter duo who has taken a 15-year-long (and counting) martial arts journey together.
“We started TBG as a way to teach others the practical application of martial arts and how it can be used in everyday life,” Rebecca and Lillian said. “We wanted to empower individuals to be able to defend themselves and give them the confidence needed to succeed.”
“TBG Martial Arts was founded on, and named after, three core principles: tradition, bravery, and grit. Tradition - Taekwondo was first introduced to the United States in Texas. We wanted to preserve and continue the traditions and build on that rich heritage. Bravery - Almost anything we do in life requires some degree of bravery. And that bravery is something that is going to help us be more successful in life. The bravery inside us propels us forward to achieve our dreams. Grit - Texas has this phenomenal starting story, where the level of effort people put into it made Texas what it is today. That took a lot of drive and determination, which can be summed up as grit; to dig your heels in and get thing done. That's why we are Taekwondo… Texas-Style!”
Taekwondo initially began as a way for everyone to be able to defend themselves, and for TGB Martial Arts, that is what it still is. Their goal is to make martial arts accessible to everyone. TGB Martial Arts has a strong focus on helping people reach their goals, and they welcome students of all ages and abilities.
The Full Spectrum program is specifically designed for individuals with Autism and/or ADHD. The training facility and mat are wheelchair accessible. Families are encouraged to train together to strengthen family bonds. As owners of a small school, Lillian and Rebecca modify their curriculum to fit the needs of the individual.
Rebecca and her husband, David, welcomed their first child, Lillian 20 years ago. When Lilly was barely 5 years old, Rebecca and Lilly started taking Taekwondo lessons together. Five years later, they welcomed their second child, Lochlan. David and Lochlan then followed suit, beginning their Taekwondo journey together. The entire family loves playing video games, going for walks, and, of course, Taekwondo. Lochlan is autistic, so has special interests in water towers and trains, so the family has taken many trips to water towers across the country and taken train trips whenever they can. “Lochlan's autism and ADHD are what inspired us to make TBG Martial Arts accessible to everyone,” explained Rebecca.
When not at TBG, Lillian can be found at The University of Texas at Dallas studying chemistry. Her aspirations are to become a pharmaceutical research chemist. She is also working in a research laboratory there. She has been an assistant volleyball coach at PSA and, in her spare time, she is writing a computer game with her friends.
Rebecca is a database programmer by trade and holds a bachelor's degree in computer science and a master's degree in information systems management. She has a multitude of hobbies, some of which are painting, drawing, crocheting, tatting, and jewelry-making. She also has a love of sports and of teaching others. She has been a volleyball coach, and sometimes soccer coach, at PSA for the past 14 years.
“We want to raise expectations of what a dojang [dojo] can be by meeting needs at a small scale. A black belt should hold a great deal of meaning to those wearing it, and we strive to make sure that the meaning is realized,” Rebecca emphasized. “There is more to martial arts than just the physical aspect, it encompasses character development, builds confidence tempered with respect, and creates a strong sense of community.”
