Finding Her Voice and Giving Back

Kianna Murren uses her love of music and passion for volunteering to make a difference in her community.

Seventeen-year-old Kianna Murren has called Mechanicsburg home for her entire life. A junior at Mechanicsburg High School, Kianna is carving out her path through music, academics, and volunteering. Her love for music and her commitment to giving back make her a standout in her community. Music has been a central part of Kianna’s life since fifth grade when she joined her school’s chorus. “It all started because my school offered chorus as an extra class, and I thought it sounded fun,” she says.

“Now, it’s become such an important part of my life. Chorus gives me a place where everyone is passionate about the same thing—making something beautiful together.”

One of her most memorable experiences came during a school trip to Disney World. “We got to sing with professional Disney singers at Epcot,” Kianna says. “It was an incredible experience that made me realize how music brings people together, no matter where you’re from.”

Beyond music, Kianna’s dedication to her community shines through her volunteer work. She actively participates in events like Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Go Red for Women. “Both causes are close to my heart because they focus on helping people live healthier lives,” Kianna explains. “Being able to support those battling serious health challenges, even in a small way, feels really meaningful.”

Balancing her passions with other responsibilities hasn’t always been easy. Kianna recently started a part-time job in retail, which added another layer to her busy schedule. "It's definitely a challenge,” she admits. “But I think one of the most important skills to learn in high school is how to find balance. Not everything in your life needs to have equal importance all the time—you just have to figure out what needs your focus in the moment.”

When asked who inspires her, Kianna doesn’t hesitate. “My mom has always been my rock,” she says. “She’s been there for me through everything and has always protected me. If I can be half as strong and loving as she is one day, I’ll be happy.”

As Kianna looks toward the future, she has big plans. “I want to go to college in Harrisburg and get my master’s degree in psychology,” she shares. “My dream is to become a pediatric psychologist. My siblings inspired me to take this path because I’ve seen how important it is for kids to have someone who will listen and help them through tough times.”

Whether it’s creating harmony in her school chorus, lending a hand at community events, or dreaming of helping children as a psychologist, Kianna’s dedication to making a difference is clear. “If I can have a positive impact on even one person’s life, that’s all I could ask for,” she says.

With her passion for music and her heart for service, Kianna is a shining example of what it means to make the most of every opportunity.
