The Annexstad Home

1170 Lake Shore Overlook

After 34 years in Windward and three beloved homes, Tom and Karen Annexstad have created a one-of-a-kind retreat on Lake Windward where rustic elegance, family memories, and breathtaking views come together.

Some homes have a beautiful backyard. Others have a great view. Then there are homes like Tom and Karen Annexstad's, where every day feels a little like a getaway.

Positioned on a prime lakefront lot in Lakeshore, their home captures everything people love about living in this community: peaceful water views, mature trees, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature while still being close to everything. After 34 years in Windward and three different homes within the neighborhood, they know exactly what makes this place special.

Windward has been more than an address for the Annexstads. It's where they raised their three children, Shane, Kaci, and Blake, through every stage of family life. From their early years in Harbour Walk to school days in Bent Creek and now lakefront living in Lakeshore, the neighborhood has provided the backdrop for decades of memories.

"We have loved living in this home for 13 years. It is a special neighborhood on the lake, with never-ending beautiful views of nature."

That connection to the outdoors became the inspiration for a remarkable transformation.

The Transformation

Built in 1999, the house already sat on an incredible lot when the Annexstads purchased it in 2012. What followed was an extensive renovation that completely reimagined the home while preserving its warm, welcoming character.

Working alongside builder Jim Bonem, they expanded the property with two additional garages, a spacious guest suite, and a home gym. The project ultimately stretched to 18 months, but the result was worth every minute.

Today, the home blends sophisticated design with rustic charm. Reclaimed barnwood floors add character underfoot. Handmade iron bannisters, exposed beams, custom lighting, and a dramatic stone fireplace create a sense of craftsmanship throughout the living spaces. Every room feels curated rather than decorated.

Thoughtfully Curated

One of the home's most distinctive qualities is its collection of architectural details and antique pieces gathered over the years. The Annexstads describe their style as eclectic, and that influence can be seen throughout the home.

Many of the home's distinctive furnishings, architectural elements, and decorative pieces were sourced from Scott’s Antique Market and antique stores featuring European vendors. Over the years, they carefully collected items that spoke to them, incorporating those finds into the remodel and creating a home filled with character, history, and warmth.

A particularly creative addition came from reclaiming attic space to create a striking two-story office and library overlooking the front entry. It's both functional and unexpected, serving as a centerpiece for Tom's business collection and workspace.

The lower level continues the entertaining theme with a sports-bar-inspired great room complete with a stone bar. Over the years, it has hosted everything from graduation parties and birthdays to bridal and baby showers. Countless game days have unfolded there as well, creating memories that have become part of the home's story.

Where Everyone Wants to Gather

While the interiors are stunning, the outdoor spaces may be the home's true showstoppers.

Spanning two levels, the outdoor living areas include multiple dining spaces, two fireplaces, a poolside gathering area, and even a built-in pizza oven. Add a big-screen television and a lake view, and it's easy to understand why family and friends never want to leave.

"We love our backyard living. It feels like we are totally out of the city!"

A Love of Home and Landscape

Blooming trees, thoughtful plantings, and year-round color help create the same sense of connection to nature that makes their property so special. It's a passion that runs deep.

In fact, Tom often jokes that he should have been a landscaper.

Standing on the terrace overlooking Lake Windward, it's easy to appreciate everything this property offers. The reclaimed wood, stone fireplaces, antique treasures, and expansive outdoor living spaces are certainly impressive. Yet what makes this home truly special is the life that has unfolded here and throughout the family's 34 years in Windward.

For Tom and Karen, it's not just a beautiful house on the lake. It's the place where family memories were made, lifelong friendships were formed, and three children, Shane, Kaci, and Blake, were raised in a community they have proudly called home.
