The Capeharts: A Family Rooted in Tradition, Service, and Winfield Pride

In the Castleknock Ridge neighborhood, the Capehart family embodies the spirit of Winfield—deep roots, strong values, and an unwavering commitment to community. Curtis and Krista Capehart, along with their 20-year-old twin daughters Gwyneth and Ainslee, are all proud graduates of Winfield High School, and their ties to the area stretch across decades. “We’ve been in Castleknock for 15 years, but our hearts have always been here in Winfield,” said Krista. The family includes Reagan an 8-year-old Malshi.
Krista shared the story of how she and Curtis met. “We met when I was 11 and Curt was 13 in the Winfield Middle School Band. We were both in the Winfield High School band. We were friends for 4 years, then dated 4 years, and have been married for 29 years. My mom taught at Winfield Middle for 25 years, and Curt’s mom still substitutes teaches at Winfield Middle and High. “Both of us grew up here in Winfield and were married in Cross Lanes at the Cross Lanes United Methodist Church,” Krista shared. They married in 1996 and have now been together for nearly 33 years, raising their daughters with the same values of education, service, and family they were brought up with. “It’s funny to think the kids our girls graduated with are the children of people Curtis and I graduated with. That’s the kind of close-knit community Winfield is,” Krista shared with Stroll Winfield.
Curtis graduated from Marshall and then went to law school at the University of Michigan. Krista went to undergrad at Marshall, then earned a Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of Michigan, and her Master's in drug law and policy at the University of Florida.
Professionally, Curtis is an attorney who served as Deputy Attorney General for West Virginia for nearly seven years and is now the Director of Policy for Governor Patrick Morrisey and Chair of the School Building Authority. Krista is a pharmacist and clinical professor at WVU School of Pharmacy, currently serving as the Director of Professional and Regulatory Affairs at the WV Board of Pharmacy. Her resume includes state and national recognitions, including the 2025 WVPA James H. Beal Award and the 2021 National Woman Pharmacist of the Year.
Their daughters, Gwyneth and Ainslee, were born in Columbus, OH, when Krista was 30 weeks pregnant at 2 and ½ pounds each. “They were in the NICU for 27 days and came home at 4 pounds before I would have been 34 weeks pregnant.”
While at WHS, both girls were very active; Gwyn was a varsity cheerleader, and Ainslee was in the Marching band and clarinet section leader both her junior and senior year. Now in college, the girls continue to shine bright in the collegiate communities. Gwyn, a senior at Marshall University, is a Health Professions major and a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority, where she leads Bible studies and is the Communications Vice President. Ainslee, a junior nursing student at Kent State University, is active in the Student Nurses Association and interdisciplinary research.
The Capeharts value tradition and togetherness. Holidays are hosted at their home, and prime rib is the family favorite. They love quirky vacations, canning salsa, baking apple pies, and tracking down the best places to eat—“#vacationisforeating” is a frequent hashtag on their travels.
Curtis and Krista are heavily involved in Winfield United Methodist Church, serving in the choir, bell choir, and various leadership roles. Krista has received numerous awards in pharmacy for community and professional service: 2025 WV Pharmacist Association James H Beal Award, 2024 Phi Lambda Sigma Mary L Euler Proctor and Gamble Lifetime Pharmacy Leadership Award, 2022 Hubert H Humphrey Award from the American Pharmacist Association, 2022 National Adult and Influenza Immunization Summit Immunization Neighborhood National Champion, 2021 American Pharmacist Association Immunization Champion, 2021 WV Bowl of Hygeia, Civilian Award for Humanitarian Service (U.S. Dept. of the Army). Krista also volunteers with Backpack Buddies and the Winfield High School Marching Band, and even makes hot dog chili for the concession stand.
When it comes to unwinding, each family member has their niche—Curtis enjoys golf and games of all kinds. Krista loves reading and crafting, Gwyn likes to organize and plan, and Ainslee relaxes with yoga and knitting.
“Our family’s story is really a Winfield story,” said Krista. “It’s where we grew up, fell in love, raised our daughters, and found a place where tradition and community truly matter.”
