Maddie O'Neal Balances Music, Leadership, and Tennis
Maddie O’Neal is an 18-year-old senior at Winfield High School and the daughter of Tim and Heather O'Neal. The family has resided in The Woods subdivision for three years, Maddie has made an indelible mark on her school and community through a variety of academic, athletic, and extracurricular pursuits.
Her involvement spans student council, marching band, show choir, tennis, and more. Maddie currently serves as Student Body President, is the trumpet section leader for the WHS Marching Band, and has earned accolades like the Girl Scout Silver Award and participation in All-State Chorus. "It's been an incredible journey," Maddie explained to Stroll Winfield. "I've grown so much and made lasting memories through all these experiences."
Music has played a significant role in Maddie's high school career. She began playing the trumpet in middle school, which naturally led her to join the WHS Marching Band. Her passion for music expanded when she joined General Admission’s Show Band and later the Emerald Elegance Show Choir. "One of my favorite memories is high-fiving someone so hard after my first on-field marching band performance that I dislocated my shoulder," Maddie shared with a laugh. "Honestly, it was worth it considering all the amazing experiences I've had."
In addition to her musical accomplishments, Maddie has a deep love for tennis, which she started playing in elementary school. Now serving as team captain, she enjoys the supportive environment and camaraderie with her teammates. "Being on the tennis team has been such a rewarding part of my time at Winfield High School," she said. "It's about more than just winning matches — it's about growing together as a team."
Balancing such a demanding schedule hasn't always been easy, but Maddie credits open communication with coaches and mentors for helping her maintain equilibrium. Her optimism and gratitude also play a key role in her ability to stay motivated. "Having gratitude for every moment helps me smile and stay positive, even in tough situations," she explained.
Looking ahead, Maddie plans to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering and eventually attend medical school. Her ambition and leadership are inspired by her father, whom she admires deeply. "My dad has always been a role model," she said. "His love for leadership and helping others has motivated me to follow a similar path."
With a heart full of gratitude and a mindset on success, Maddie is ready to take on the next chapter of her life while cherishing the memories and lessons learned at Winfield High School.
