Standing Together for Ty Laughery and His Family
Tyler “Ty” Laughery is a 16-year-old junior at Winfield High School who has spent most of his life in the Johnson Place neighborhood of Scott Depot. He lives with his family—siblings Mike, Mary Beth, Tanner (21), and Toby (19)—along with their two beloved dogs, Lily, a miniature goldendoodle, and Rip, a miniature schnauzer. Known throughout the community for his positive spirit, strong work ethic, and team-first attitude, Ty has always been full of energy, optimism, and determination

A dedicated three-sport athlete, Ty plays football, basketball, and baseball for Winfield High School. His love for sports began early, starting with basketball at just three years old at Riverlawn Presbyterian Church in St. Albans, where his mom grew up and where his dad often served as his coach. From t-ball in kindergarten to flag football at the YMCA, Ty was always eager to stay active and compete. He decided to play tackle football in eighth grade and has embraced the sport ever since, valuing not only the competition but the lifelong friendships that come with being part of a team.
That commitment has led to notable achievements, including earning Second Team All-Conference honors in football and being part of Winfield’s state tournament baseball team for the past two years. Despite the demanding schedule of playing three sports, Ty has remained laser-focused on his academics. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA while taking college courses and is an active member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. Ty also serves as a Link Crew Leader, mentoring incoming freshmen, works as a summer lifeguard at FMC, and attends Gateway Christian Church at the Teays Valley campus.
Recently, Ty and the Laughery family received life-altering news: Ty was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The diagnosis has turned their world upside down, bringing emotional challenges and significant financial burdens. Medical bills, travel expenses for treatments, and everyday living costs have quickly added up, creating an overwhelming strain during an already difficult time.
In response, the Winfield community has rallied around Ty and his family extraordinarily. Recently, Winfield High School proudly dressed in green and purple to show unwavering support, sending a powerful message of unity and love. The outpouring of prayers, encouragement, and generosity has been tremendous, not only from Winfield and schools throughout Putnam County, but from communities across the entire region. This collective support has been a reminder to the Laughery family that they are not alone in this fight.
Winfield's basketball coach, Travis Tarr, commented, “Ty is an amazing young man. I have had the opportunity to coach him and his two brothers, as well as coach alongside his father, Mike. His mother, Mary Beth, serves with our teams' boosters. The Laughery Family is a giving family full of faith and determination, and I know that the love and prayers our community has shown will carry them through this incredibly challenging time.”
Those who know Ty have seen his strength and resilience shine through, even in the face of adversity. His determination, faith, and positive outlook continue to inspire teammates, classmates, and everyone who knows him. While the road ahead will not be easy, Ty faces it surrounded by a community that believes in him and stands firmly by his side.
The costs associated with Ty’s treatment are overwhelming. The Laughery family is facing mounting medical bills, travel expenses for appointments and hospital stays, as well as the everyday costs of food, gas, and household needs. These financial pressures add another layer of difficulty during an already emotional time, making it even harder for Ty’s parents to focus solely on being present with him during treatment.
In response, a GoFundMe account has been established to help support Ty and his family through this journey. The outpouring of generosity has been incredible, and every contribution, whether through a donation, sharing the fundraiser, or continued prayers, helps ease the burden on the family.
Thank you to everyone who has stepped forward to support the Laughery family. No parent should have to walk this road alone, and every act of kindness, no matter the size, truly makes a difference. The strength of this community continues to remind the Laughery family that they are surrounded by love, hope, and unwavering support as Ty bravely fights this battle.
As Ty continues his treatment and recovery, the support of friends, neighbors, and even strangers has made a meaningful difference, easing some of the burdens and allowing his family to focus on Ty’s health, healing, and recovery. The Winfield community will continue cheering him on, sending strength and prayers every step of the way.
