Putnam County Pedalers:
Building Strong Minds, Bodies, and Friendships Through Mountain Biking
In Putnam County, a unique team is carving trails and forging lifelong friendships. The Putnam County Pedalers, a mountain biking team for middle school and high school students (grades 6-12), is more than just a sports team—it’s a family.
A Team for All Riders
The Putnam County Pedalers welcome students from public, private, and homeschool backgrounds. What sets this team apart is its commitment to inclusivity. Unlike many other sports, there are no tryouts—every rider, whether a beginner or an elite racer, is given the opportunity to grow, learn, and compete.
Parents play a crucial role in this team, with many serving as coaches or providing essential support at practices and races. It’s a community-driven effort that fosters a culture of encouragement and personal development.
The Journey to Excellence
The National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA), founded in 2009, is the backbone of the Pedalers’ philosophy. The West Virginia Interscholastic Cycling League (WVICL) launched in 2018, and by 2020, the Putnam Pedalers had been established, growing into a powerhouse program.
Since its inception, the team has dominated the state circuit, securing three consecutive state championships in 2022, 2023, and 2024. However, their success is not just measured in podium finishes but in the personal growth and resilience of each rider.
More Than Just a Sport
Mountain biking with the Putnam Pedalers is about far more than competition. It’s about learning life skills, building confidence, and creating a supportive community. The team’s 20-plus coaches play an instrumental role in shaping these young athletes, offering not just technical training but also emotional support. Some of the most important moments happen not on the racecourse, but in the quiet conversations on the trail, helping riders navigate the challenges of adolescence as well as the terrain.
A Culture of Support
The camaraderie among the Pedalers is something truly special. Teammates celebrate each other’s victories and encourage in tough moments. A common scene at races is one rider crossing the finish line only to turn back and cheer for their teammate, sharing high-fives and hugs in a true display of sportsmanship and friendship.
Lifelong Lessons and a Bright Future
Many Pedalers start as beginners and develop into elite racers by their senior year. Beyond skill, they learn the value of perseverance, inclusivity, and teamwork. Mountain biking is a lifelong sport, and many alumni continue riding after graduation—some even return as coaches to inspire the next generation of riders.
For those interested in joining, the team hosts three meet-and-greet events each spring where potential riders can try it out. Mountain biking is more than just exercise—it’s a chance to unplug, explore the outdoors, and discover a new passion.
So, if you're looking for a sport where you can challenge yourself, make friends, and be part of an incredible community, the Putnam County Pedalers are ready to welcome you. Just hop on a bike and ride!
