Hammer Time With Ron Houck

In many homes, the kitchen is where the day begins and where it ends. Residents pour coffee, children do homework, and conversations stretch long after dinner. For Ron Houck Jr., those everyday moments are why remodeling matters. A well-designed kitchen can quietly improve how families live every day.

Remodeling has been part of Ron’s life since he was a teenager. His father started Houck Remodeling in 1984, and Ron began helping with projects while in high school. He continued working with his father through college.

By 1991, Ron had become a partner in the business. He and his father worked side by side growing the company while narrowing its focus. Kitchens and bathrooms eventually became the specialty. Ron spent years running projects and managing crews while his father handled estimates and worked closely with customers. “We learned early on that it’s important to take care of people and make sure their needs are met,” Ron shares. “If you do that, the work keeps coming.”

Today, the company has come full circle as another generation steps into leadership. Ron’s oldest son, Zack, became a part owner three years ago and now manages job sites and crews. Ron has gradually stepped into the same role his father once held, focusing on bids and customer relations. Another of Ron’s three sons works in the business as well. For Ron, that family continuity means as much as the work itself. “I spent 42 years working with my dad before he retired,” he says. “Now, I get to spend most days working with my boys.”

Though it takes on other home improvement projects, Houck Remodeling focuses on kitchen and bathroom remodeling. “In most houses, the kitchen and the bathrooms are where people spend the most time,” Ron notes. “If those rooms work better for your day-to-day routine, they change how the whole house feels.” Sometimes, improvements involve major structural changes, such as reworking layouts or structural changes. Other times, the solution is simpler. Better cabinet arrangement, improved lighting, or a more functional design can make a room and the home feel completely different.

One of Ron’s favorite parts of the job is guiding homeowners. “People usually come to us because something about their home isn’t working for them,” he explains. “Helping them through the design and material selections and then seeing the finished result come together is the most rewarding part.”

Houck Remodeling has deliberately built its reputation. Ron notes that folks can easily purchase nearly every product the team uses from somewhere else. Cabinets, fixtures, tile, and countertops are available from many sources. The difference comes from the people installing them. Ron adds, “The only thing a homeowner can’t get somewhere else is us—our reputation, our work ethic, and the way we treat people.” Ron mentions that the business trucks proudly display the company name. “We want people to know who we are and that we stand behind the work we do,” he states.

That reputation has helped the company develop a loyal customer base throughout the Dayton area. In recent years, Houck Remodeling has also been recognized as one of the top remodeling companies in the region, which makes the entire team proud.

Even with decades of experience, Ron still reminds his crews of one simple rule before they enter any home. “We tell everyone who works with us that we are guests in someone’s home,” he says. “Remodeling can be disruptive, and we try to minimize that as much as possible.”

Outside of work, family continues to play a central role in Ron’s life. Even though several family members work together, they still enjoy spending time together after hours. Ron and his wife also enjoy spending time outdoors, working in the yard and getting out into nature when they have the chance.

For someone who has spent decades helping people improve their homes, Ron says success today looks a little different from what it did earlier in his career. Completing projects homeowners love still matters, but so does something else. “I want to keep growing the business so my kids and grandsons have something they can be proud of,” he comments.

Ron understands the idea of legacy well. The business his father started four decades ago now spans three generations.

Ron hopes that when people look back at his career, they remember more than the kitchens and bathrooms his team built. “I’d like to be remembered as someone who had integrity and cared about the people we had the pleasure of working for,” he says.
