Emma Smith: Leading with Heart, Hustle, and Teamwork
Family has always been at the center of Emma Smith’s journey. The Culloden resident is the daughter of Rick and Rachel Payton and the younger sister of Maya. She credits her family’s constant support for helping shape both the athlete and the person she has become. Now an 18-year-old senior at Cabell Midland High School, Emma continues to make her family proud every time she steps onto the basketball court.
Emma has been playing basketball for eight years, beginning in fifth grade after deciding she wanted to try just about everything when it came to sports. What started as something she thought would be fun quickly grew into a passion that has defined much of her high school experience. A guard for Cabell Midland, Emma values the responsibility and leadership that come with her position, embracing both the physical and mental demands of the game.
“My favorite thing about basketball is the teamwork aspect,” Emma shared with Stroll Barboursville. “It really does take everyone to be successful, and that’s what makes it so special.”
Throughout her career, Emma has been influenced by several coaches, but one stands out above the rest. “Coach Schmidt is my favorite because she has taught me so much and is making me a better basketball player and a better person,” Emma said. That growth was evident during her junior year, when she earned MSAC Honorable Mention, an achievement that reflected both her talent and dedication.
For Emma, one of the most memorable moments of her career came early. Beating Spring Valley her freshman year on the Night of Champions to win the MSAC Championship remains a highlight she will never forget. Just as meaningful, though, are the everyday moments with her teammates. “My favorite thing about my team is how close we are,” Emma said. “We can always have a good time together, even when things get tough.”
Basketball has taught Emma lessons that extend far beyond the court. Through years of practice, games, and challenges, she has learned the importance of hard work, discipline, and perseverance. “I’ve learned how to figure things out when times are tough,” Emma shared. “Basketball has really prepared me for life.”
After graduation, Emma plans to attend Bethany College, where she will major in Exercise Science while continuing her basketball career. As she looks ahead, she also hopes to inspire younger athletes who are just starting out. Her advice is simple but powerful: work hard, practice with purpose, and master the basics.
With her strong family foundation, love for her teammates, and commitment to constant improvement, Emma Smith exemplifies what it means to be a true student-athlete, and her best chapters are still ahead.
