THE ART OF CALLING IT A DAY

Why “done for today” can be just as important as checking one more thing off your list.

I have a wonderful family, a job I enjoy, good friends and we love the neighborhood. But I always feel like I’m mentally juggling the next thing on my to-do list. Even when I’m sitting on the patio with a glass of wine, I can’t seem to unwind. What on earth?

It often feels like we are always busy, constantly looking for the next task on a never-ending to-do list. However, it is important to remind yourself that it is okay to be done for the day. While to-do lists are never truly finished, they can be finished for the day, allowing you the space to wind down.

To help manage this, I suggest keeping an ongoing master list and then creating a smaller, daily list. This "chunking" method will give you the breathing room you need to relax at the end of the day. Give yourself the grace and permission to stop working and perhaps enjoy a glass of wine to unwind.

To help you transition and stay present, I also recommend the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique. This simple mindfulness exercise uses your five senses to calm your mind:
5 things you can See: Look around your space and notice five objects or details in the room.
4 things you can Feel: Notice four physical sensations (like your feet on the floor, the texture of your clothes, or touch fabric nearby).
3 things you can Hear: Listen for three ambient sounds (a dog barking, a hum from a HVAC, or kids playing).
2 things you can Smell: Identify two scents around you (like soap and fresh air).
1 thing you can Taste: Your evening glass wine.
