Last month, we featured Bob, the Boston Terrier, and this month we are featuring his roomie, Ed. Ed is a Treeing Walker Coonhound and Husky mix, often called a Walker Husky, which is a unique and energetic hybrid dog that combines the best traits of two hardworking breeds. This mixed breed typically inherits the Treeing Walker Coonhound’s exceptional scent-tracking abilities and hunting instincts along with the Siberian Husky’s intelligence, endurance, and striking appearance. The result is a medium-to-large dog that is athletic, alert, and full of personality. Ed is getting up there in years and is 14 years old. His benefactor is Rachel, who lives in Belleair and walks Bob and Ed regularly through Hunter's Memorial Park. When I saw Ed, I was sure that he was a Border Collie as he had similar markings. But Rachel explained that she became bored during COVID and did a DNA test on Ed and found out that he was a Treeing Walker Coonhound and Husky mix, plus a few other breeds mixed in. 

Walker Huskies are known for their friendly and affectionate nature. They often form strong bonds with their families and enjoy spending time with people. Because both parent breeds are highly active, this mix requires plenty of daily exercise, including walks, runs, and opportunities to explore. Without adequate physical and mental stimulation, they may become bored and develop destructive behaviors.

Their appearance can vary widely, with some dogs inheriting the Husky’s blue eyes and thick coat, while others display the shorter coat and classic markings of the Treeing Walker Coonhound. Regardless of appearance, they are generally intelligent and eager to learn, although they can sometimes be independent and stubborn.

With proper training, socialization, and exercise, a Treeing Walker Coonhound and Husky mix can make a loyal, loving, and adventurous companion for active families.
