This month, we enjoyed another lively roundtable discussion featuring A Painted House by John Grisham. Best known for his gripping legal thrillers, Grisham takes a different direction in this heartfelt coming of age story set in rural Arkansas in 1952.

Told through the eyes of seven year old Luke Chandler, the novel offers readers a glimpse into the hardships of cotton farming while exploring themes of family, loyalty, resilience, and the loss of innocence.

Our members had mixed reactions to this richly layered story. Some appreciated its authentic portrayal of country life, while others found the slower pace and darker themes more challenging. Regardless of opinion, everyone agreed that the book inspired meaningful conversation. In the end, A Painted House earned a strong 4.3 out of 5 rating from the group.

Looking ahead, we will gather on September 15 to discuss Theo of Golden by Allen Levi, an inspiring novel about the quiet power of kindness. Then, on October 20, we will explore The Correspondent, an epistolary novel by Virginia Evans.
