Layer In the Cozy

A fall refresh without the redo

There’s a moment every year, usually that first crisp morning when mist settles over the mountains, when home starts calling us back inside. After many years of helping neighbors feather their nests, I can tell you fall is my favorite season to decorate for, because it asks so little of us. You don’t need to redo a room to welcome the season. You simply “layer in the cozy.”

This fall, texture is everything. Drape a chunky knit or wool throw over the arm of the sofa, then mix in pillows of velvet, bouclé and nubby linen. The season’s palette is wonderfully warm and earthy: burnt umber, burgundy, forest green, camel and soft oatmeal. Here’s my favorite trick: Choose two or three shades from the same family and repeat them around the room. That tonal layering is what makes a space feel collected rather than decorated.

Next, warm up your light. As the evenings arrive earlier, lamplight becomes the heart of a room. Add a ceramic table lamp with a warm glaze, light a few candles and layer your lighting low. A glow at every level feels like an embrace.

Finally, bring the outdoors in. Dried botanicals such as wheat, hydrangea and eucalyptus last all season and look beautiful gathered loosely in a favorite vase. Add a woven basket to hold extra throws, and suddenly the whole house is ready for football afternoons, soup simmering on the stove and friends lingering a little longer at the table.

The loveliest fall rooms aren’t the trendiest ones; they’re the ones that make people want to stay. If you’d like a hand in layering in the cozy, stop by and see us at Yesterday’s Tree. The coffee is on, and we’d love to help you fall in love with home all over again.
