Dulce and Roger Zaragoza moved to Canterwood in 2004 with their children, Gerson and Charmaine, following house searches in Gig Harbor for almost a year when Canterwood kept coming back as their top choice. Dulce had her sight on the remaining

undeveloped sloping wilderness of 11815 50th Ave Ct NW. There were no St. Anthony’s Hospital, Costco, or even a second Narrows Bridge at that time. She envisioned constructing a house, with a water fountain in front and a creek at the backyard preserving as much as possible the natural features of a forest-like setting right in the heart of Gig Harbor. She found Canterwood an ideal place to continue raising

their children while enjoying a healthy, peaceful, and productive living.

The move to Canterwood is the culmination of their westward migration from the East Coast (Columbia, SC) to the Pacific Northwest with the same spirit of adventure and freedom, blazing a new frontier and exploration of the continental U.S. by the original

settlers of the 13 colonies, “from sea to shining sea”. They first settled in the Tacoma Narrows area east of the Narrows bridge then finally continued further west, crossed the bridge and moved to Gig Harbor. After Roger finished his residency training in Psychiatry at the University of South Carolina/William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute, the migration to Tacoma brought Dulce closer to her father and family who were then

residing in the Seattle area. Her father, Dr. Reynaldo Mantuano, was performing his duty as Vice-Consul in the only Philippine consulate of the Pacific Northwest in the 1990s.

Dulce and Roger were both born and raised in the Philippines, and met while attending medical school at University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center College of Medicine in the Philippines. Dulce got her MD degree then moved to the U.S. to follow her husband, Roger. They started a family in South Carolina where Roger finished his psychiatry residency training.

Gerson graduated from the University of Washington, became a medical doctor and subsequently married Jesse Angelica San Juan in 2024, herself a medical doctor, and board-certified psychiatrist. Gerson splits his time working in health care research and

music, his true passion. He placed second in the Pacific Northwest guitar competition called “Guitarmaggedon” sponsored by The Guitar Center while in high school. He plays in different bands, performing in the Seattle area and in several major U.S. cities. He played for the University of Washington lacrosse team during his pre-med years. He does snowboarding, skateboarding, weightlifting, and did karate among other sports.

Charmaine finished a degree in Psychology, and master's in social work at the University of Washington. She now works as a Designated Crisis Responder, assessing patients for dangerousness to self and/or others requiring further hospitalization or if safe for release to the community. She attained blackbelt in Tae

Kwon Do and was a cheerleader during her Bellarmine high school years. She has two dogs, Dobo and Chico, both talented French bulldogs. Gerson and Jesse have

Johnson, also a talented Maltese poodle.

Roger, Dulce, Gerson, and Jesse all attended the same Alma Mater and graduated with M.D. degrees. Gerson and Jesse also met in the same medical school about 30 years later. Coincidence or fate, it happened as if following the journey of Dulce and Roger.

Dulce just attended her 40th Medical Alumni homecoming last February, 2026. She missed the Superbowl in person but watched it live in a Manila sports bar with husband Roger and the 12s both from the US and the Philippine chapter. Dulce is better known as “Dr. Lady Hawk”, a superfan who attends Seahawks games, training camps and easily mingling with the Seahawks players. She adapted quickly while performing different roles as wife, mother, MD, and real estate broker, “Your Doctor in Real Estate”.

She has sold houses in Canterwood and still does real estate but only for her family and close friends needing her services. She travels with her husband Roger, and had been to Australia (Sydney and Melbourne), Paris, Italy (Rome, Venice, Florence, Milan), London, Iceland, Spain (Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, and Zaragoza), Mexican and Alaska cruises, Banff, Niagara Falls, Victoria, BC, and of course, visiting the Philippines regularly among other places.

Dulce and Roger most recently did medical mission in Lipa City, Philippines with some of her medical school classmates and colleagues last March, 2026. Dulce celebrated both her 50th and 60th birthdays at Canterwood Golf and Country Club with family and

friends.

Roger is an MD, board-certified psychiatrist, one-time medical director of the inpatient psychiatric unit at VA Puget Sound Health Care System, American Lake Division in Lakewood. He provided psychiatric services for Veterans with PTSD, depression, anxiety, mood and psychotic disorders, substance and alcohol issues, homeless Veterans, in inpatient, outpatient, and residential settings. He worked at Western State

Hospital treating psychiatric symptoms of forensic patients requiring competency restoration for serious legal charges, NGRI (not guilty by reason of insanity) patients, and gero-psychiatric patients with dementia and behavioral issues. He provided consultation-liaison services for active soldiers at Madigan Army Medical Center, outpatient mental health services at Greater Lakes Mental Health Care for chronically mentally ill patients residing in group homes in the community, and performed psychiatric disability evaluations for financial assistance on those with mental health symptoms affecting their ability to work. He also worked at the Tacoma NW ICE Processing Center treating immigrant detainees with mental health issues as they tried to cope with separation from their families. After 37 years in psychiatry, Roger retired from active practice in 2024 to continue pursuit of his passion in chess, organic

gardening, vermiculture, reading books, watching documentaries, history and music among other things. He spends his time with Dulce traveling, and at home with his hobbies. They both enjoy walking in the Canterwood neighborhood, getting to know the

neighbors, and hosting Seahawks 12s and friends at their home.

Roger won first place in SC Amateur Chess Championship, SC Speed Chess Championship in the 1980s, WA Rapid Chess Championship and WA Class A Championship in the 1990s. Roger coached St. Charles Borromeo girls’ chess team and started St. Charles Borromeo chess program with another parent while Gerson and Charmaine attended school there. He started a chess club and did several simultaneous chess exhibitions for Veterans at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, American Lake Division. He continues to compete in chess tournaments here

in WA state.

Dulce and Roger are now empty nesters and fully retired. Dulce remains busy with her Seahawks, attending training camps, football games, 12s activities, and NFL draft parties. Roger continues his regular chess studies, always preparing for chess tournaments, engaging in organic gardening, vermiculture, biking, and polishing his basketball skills. They intend to spend their retirement years in this beautiful Canterwood neighborhood, ideally located minutes away from essential services and providing a very high quality of life practically unmatched by other settings.
