Meet Local Residents Christopher and Logan Pardo
A Sunday afternoon in Cobble Hill Park
Can you introduce your family and share a bit about them, including names and ages?
I am married to Sofia Zeno for 17 years. We have a 13-year-old son, Logan Pardo. I met my wife in Carroll Gardens when she moved next door to the brownstone I lived in since I was a teenager. My wife is an amazing mother to our son and quite frankly the most amazing woman I have ever met. She is a career professional and is the foundation of our family. Logan is my greatest joy in my life and being his father is a privilege. He is exceedingly kind and an old soul. His level of maturity at 13 years old astonishes me. My wife and I have watched our son grow and evolve through the years. We couldn't be prouder of our young son.
How long have you lived in the neighborhood? Where are you and your family originally from, and what brought you here?
I am a lifelong resident of the neighborhood. I was born at Long Island College Hospital, went to grammar school on Degraw Street, and was an altar boy at St. Agnes. As a young boy, my brother and I had a paper route in the neighborhood, and I worked at a local deli up until high school. My family migrated here from South America. My father is from Colombia, and my mother is from Chile. My aunt came to Carroll Gardens before my father came to this country. She encouraged my father to move to the neighborhood.
What college / university did you attend? What subject(s) did you major in, and what degree(s) did you obtain?
I attended Polytechnic University and Columbia University. My original major was electrical engineering, and I switched to finance when I transferred to Columbia.
Tell us about your kids.
I have a 13-year-old son named Logan. My son attends Basis Independent in Red Hook. My son is also an avid Pokémon card collector and enjoys watching soccer. Cristiano Ronaldo is his favorite player. He's a young man with a big heart and is mature beyond his years. Finally, he has an amazing sense of humor and can make my wife, and I laugh at a moment's notice.
What's your profession(s), and where do you work? Do you own a local business?
I am in private equity. My partner and I own the firm. We have extensive experience in lending, developing, owning and operating residential real estate assets. The majority of our deals are up and down the east coast with a heavy concentration in the tristate area and Florida.
Can you highlight any unique talents or interests that each family member brings to the mix?
My wife and I are very driven in our respective careers. We try to show that to Logan along with a balance of family life and sense of community. We try to instill in Logan a proper work ethic with the understanding that there are no short cuts in life. My son has shown us the ability to not only learn what we try to instill in him but also adapt to situations when required. He brings a fresh perspective to various topics we discuss and has been able to show me different views on various topics. He never ceases to surprise me.
How do you celebrate holidays or special occasions as a family?
We like to have our immediate family and friends over for holidays, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. We have an open-door policy, and everyone is welcome. We try to squeeze in a trip during this time frame as I nice way to end the year and recharge the batteries entering the New Year.
What are your favorite places to visit around the community (restaurants, food markets, shops, parks, clubs, hangout spots, etc.)?
We are big fans of Marco Polo Restaurant. It is conveniently located for us, and they treat us like family every time. Joe the owner, has known me since I was a kid. He knows my son since he was a newborn. They cater to my son and make him feel at home. I love that. We like Carroll Park as well. I played ball there as a kid and my son goes there to play basketball. Some of our favorite places have closed in the past few years, so we cherish the places that still remain.
How does your family contribute to fostering a sense of community spirit in the neighborhood? Do you participate in any philanthropic events or work with any charity organizations?
Yes, the volunteer work at the church is very important. It's a way of contributing and helping out people that are less fortunate or have stumbled into hard times. We need more of that as there are plenty of people in need and not enough people to help.
Chris, describe your favorite family memory in the neighborhood so far. What's your favorite part of living in the neighborhood?
This one is easy. Watching my son play in Carroll Park on the same playground my mother used to take me to go play. That was amazing. Growing up with my neighborhood friends and being outdoors playing all kinds of sports and activities as a child was terrific. It was amazing growing up here and playing stickball, handball, wiffle ball, etc. What I love about living here is being able to walk around and always run into friends old and new. That never gets old.
Chris, what moment made you realize your son was growing up?
It started in the 7th grade, when he began meeting friends for birthdays and dinners. I realized he was becoming independent. That was tough for me.
Logan, what's one lesson from your dad that has stayed with you?
When I was in elementary school, my dad always reminded me of the same three rules that have stayed with me my whole life: be polite, look before you leap, and don’t be a follower, be a leader. Those simple lessons have helped me make decisions and approach problems on a daily basis.
What's a father/son tradition that you've always shared?
We attend the US Open, Comic-Con, and the Auto Show yearly. We also make sure to have dinner out once a week, without the cell phones, and simply catch up on what we are both experiencing.
What's your favorite activity to do together?
Simply hanging out with each other. Doesn’t matter what we are doing as long as we are doing it together.
Have you ever worked on a project together? What did it teach you?
We used to build model airplanes quite a bit. That is something I used to do with my father when I was Logan’s age.
If you could take one trip together anywhere, where would you go and why? Italy or France. That is on our list of places to go; Spain is a close runner-up.
What's something you've learned from each other recently?
Chris: I have come to learn my son is a very multifaceted young man. I love that he has taken interest in so many activities outside of academics. He does an amazing job of researching every detail of what interests him. I admire that tenacity and focus. Finally, my son has taught me patience. What has eluded me most of my life has been shown and exemplified to me through my son. I know there is so much more I will learn from him, and I look forward to it all.
Logan: Recently, my dad told me more about what he was like at my age. I was surprised to learn that he dealt with some of the same things I deal with now. It made me realize that even though we grew up at completely different times, we actually have more in common than I thought.
