Meet Penny & Odin: Forest Ridge’s Tiny Dragons

Not every pet in Forest Ridge has four legs and a wagging tail. For Chelsea, Nathan, and Emma, two of the most entertaining members of the family happen to spend most of their days basking under a heat lamp.

Meet Penny and Odin, the Galbreath family’s two bearded dragons.

The two-year-old reptiles came into the family thanks to a trip to the Tulsa Reptile Expo. Emma immediately fell in love with one of the bearded dragons she saw and picked out Penny, whose name, short for Penelope, was chosen simply because Emma loved it. Mom soon fell in love, too, and it wasn’t long before she made another trip to the expo and came home with a second bearded dragon, Odin.

Odin’s name was a little more intentional. When he was younger, he had a habit of going after bugs with the determination of a tiny warrior. His family decided he needed a name to match his attitude, and Odin, the Norse god associated with war and battle, seemed like the perfect fit.

While Penny and Odin may not be the most active pets in the house, they certainly have their own personalities. Their favorite pastime is what the family affectionately describes as “hanging out all day,” basking beneath their lights and taking life at their own pace.

And apparently, being a bearded dragon is reason enough to celebrate.

Each year, Emma throws Penny and Odin a birthday party. The festivities include a cake, dressing them up and gathering family together to celebrate another year with their scaly little family members. It’s not exactly a traditional birthday party, but that’s part of what makes it so fun.

For the Galbreaths, Penny and Odin have become much more than an unexpected addition to the family. They’ve brought plenty of laughter and personality into their home, proving that pets come in all shapes, sizes and species.

“They bring so much laughter to our family and make every day feel like both a mystery and a treat,” Chelsea says.

And while Penny and Odin might not greet their family at the door or beg for treats at the dinner table, they have found their own special place in the Galbreath household. From their first meeting at the reptile expo to annual birthday celebrations, these two little dragons have created plenty of memories along the way.

Life with Penny and Odin may look a little different from life with a typical family pet, but for the Galbreaths, that’s exactly what makes it special. Sometimes the pets with the biggest personalities are the ones you least expect.
