This spring and summer, the bears in Grove Park have been especially active. Seeing one wandering through the neighborhood is always thrilling—there’s something amazing about living in a city where we still regularly cross paths with wildlife this powerful and wild.

 

It’s interesting that friends who live farther out in the country often see fewer bears than we do in Asheville neighborhoods. Our “city bears” have become very accustomed to people and the easy access to food from garbage cans, bird feeders, and even unlocked cars. Sadly, we also likely see more bears because development has reduced much of their natural habitat.

 

Most of the time, our black bears mean no harm, but they absolutely deserve our respect. Neighbors here have learned important habits: secure trash in bear-proof cans, avoid bird feeders, lock car doors, and never intentionally feed a bear. We all know to avoid getting between a mother and her cubs. Many neighbors even text one another when bears are nearby so everyone can stay alert. I can honestly report that the bear-proof cans from the city do work! That’s a whole other story!!

 

Despite the occasional chaos—like a bear climbing into my car this spring!—I still feel grateful to witness these incredible animals. Sharing photos and videos of them with family across the country never gets old.
