Welcome to the June issue of Stroll Historic Brookhaven magazine! In this issue, we kick off summer and look back at several spring events. Our residents supported many community causes, from cancer research to golf programs promoting youth.

Our cover family is the Walkers, Courtney, Jamie, Madison, and Madalyn. Courtney and Jamie had their first date at a sorority formal at the University of Georgia (UGA) and have been together ever since. They are only the third owners of their 70 year-old-house and enjoy attending UGA football games in seats that have been in Courtney’s family for 60 years. Read on to learn why National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is a favorite movie all year long, how Courtney founded her design business C. Walker Designs, and about their two Cavaliers.

Our Precious Pets this month are Daisy and Charlie, the Breens’ labradoodle and mini golden doodle, respectively. Daisy is elegant like a princess and Charlie a happy-go-lucky squirrel chaser. Turn to our story to find out why the Breens call Charlie their security system and how Daisy mothers the younger pup.

June’s Landmarks with Lisa column looks at mills that once existed along Nancy Creek and close to Historic Brookhaven. In the 19th century, anyone living in the area would have ventured to one of these to obtain cornmeal or flour. We look at Stephens, Eidson, and Harts mills, all of which once stood within three miles of our neighborhood.

Instead of one charity, this month we feature four nonprofits that work to make golf more accessible to youth. Residents Jennifer and Dan Van Horn hosted a Masters Party in April that benefited all these Georgia organizations, including the U.S. Kids Golf Foundation founded by Dan 30 years ago.

If you’re traveling this summer, make sure your Brookhaven Security Association membership is up to date. Read our story to learn how officers check on properties for traveling residents and the way you can take advantage of this benefit.

The Brookhaven Women’s Bible Study wrapped up its year with a brunch at Capital City Club (CCC) in May. The group, which has a roster of about 65 women, completed a variety of studies and community service projects in the past year. Our article includes plans for next year.

The Historic Brookhaven Neighborhood Association (HBNA) tried a new format for its spring gathering. The April cocktail party brought together over 100 residents at CCC. Read the story to learn about future events as well. Flip through our pages to see more articles, including the Piemontes’ support of Court Appointed Special Advocates and Cathy Boston’s sponsorship of the Winship Cancer Institute Fashion A Cure.

As I wrap up this issue, I can’t help but think of two special residents who have lived here more than 50 years and played a huge role in making Historic Brookhaven such a wonderful place to live, Jack and Russell Huber. Jack was one of the founding members of the neighborhood association in the 1970s and the two hosted the first Street Party in their backyard on Lakehaven Drive. They have served on HBNA boards and committees, and worked hard to keep Historic Brookhaven a haven within the city of Atlanta’s borders. They also have been an incredible source for me in researching items for the Landmarks with Lisa column. In mid-June they will leave their stone house on East Club Lane to begin the next chapter of their lives. Thank you Jack and Russell for your service, assistance, and friendship. Godspeed!

What are your intentions for this June and summer? After a fabulous trip to New Zealand and an amazing wedding for our oldest daughter Sydney in April (welcome to the family Lorne!), I look forward to time close to home and small trips. Send me an email at lgwargo@aol.com and tell me about your summer plans, hobbies, trips, volunteer engagement, business ventures, and pets.

P.S. Happy Father’s Day to my husband Joe and to all the dads in Historic Brookhaven. You are so appreciated!

Best,
Lisa Wargo
