Building Better Relationships, One Home at a Time

From custom builds to thoughtful remodels, Michael Schaefer is creating homes—and lasting relationships—across the community.

For Michael Schaefer, homebuilding has been a lifelong passion. Raised in Brenham, Michael built his first house at just 18 years old. Today, as president of Schaefer Custom Homes, LLC, he continues to bring that same enthusiasm for construction, creativity, and quality to every project.
Michael’s path has included revitalizing downtown Bryan, building custom homes, completing renovations and additions, and even teaching accounting and business courses at Blinn College. He holds both a BBA in Accounting and an MBA. His wife, Sandra, works alongside him in their downtown Bryan real estate ventures, while daughter Allison and son-in-law Sterling are part of Schaefer Custom Homes. Daughter Amanda lives in the Heights.
The inspiration for Michael’s career began even earlier. As a teenager, he spent summers at his best friend’s father’s lumber company, helping make deliveries to construction sites and becoming fascinated by everything involved in building a home.
Today, Schaefer Custom Homes primarily specializes in custom homes, while increasingly taking on additions, renovations, and complete makeovers. Michael’s philosophy is simple: “I never wanted to be that builder that answered, ‘We can’t do that.’” He enjoys challenges and thinking outside the box, while making sure every project is not only beautiful but structurally sound and built with quality.
That hands-on approach is central to the company’s identity. With a six-person team, everyone has a role while remaining involved in each project. Their tagline, “Building Better Relationships,” reflects Michael’s belief that strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and vendors are what truly set the company apart.
Community involvement is equally important. Michael has served six years on the College Station ISD school board, including serving as president during COVID, and remains active with local, state, and national homebuilding associations.
COVID brought one of the company’s greatest challenges, with nearly 20 projects under construction and major product shortages delaying completion. The experience forced the team to rethink its processes—and ultimately improve them.
Looking ahead, Michael is especially excited about renovations in Indian Lakes, where new lots are becoming limited. He is also developing Arrowhead Village, a 29-lot, one-acre-plus community near Indian Lakes featuring exclusively Schaefer Custom Homes.
His advice to homeowners? Start with function, not just pretty pictures. “Make a list of all your wants,” he says, encouraging homeowners to consider how they truly want their home to work for their lives.
Perhaps the greatest measure of success is the number of families who return to Schaefer Custom Homes again and again. The company’s current record is five homes for the same client—a testament to the relationships Michael values most.
