Dr. Jarrell presenting at a national meeting

When Dr. Donna Matthews Jarrell talks about the next chapter of her professional life, she returns to a single idea: balance. “
There’s a real interplay between the outward, action-oriented side of what I do and the more reflective, supportive side,” she says. “Both are important, and they inform each other in ways that make me better at both.”
Through Speculo Business and Clinical Services LLC, she has built a practice that intentionally bridges those two worlds—supporting organizations and leaders on one hand, and helping families care for their pets on the other.
Dr. Jarrell’s professional foundation is rooted in more than three decades of leadership in medical and scientific environments. For over 20 years, she led the Center for Comparative Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she became known for developing strong, adaptable leadership structures.
Her work extended beyond a single organization, including collaborations with national groups, board service, and contributions to advancing standards across biomedical and veterinary fields.
Leadership That Lasts
Those experiences now shape her work through Speculo Business Services, where she focuses on executive coaching and organizational consulting. Rather than relying on abstract theory, she brings a practical perspective grounded in real-world application.
“I’ve seen these strategies succeed, and I’ve also seen where they fall short,” she explains. “That perspective allows me to guide clients in a way that’s realistic, not just ideal.”
Her coaching is designed for high-performing professionals who want to grow as leaders. Clients often seek support in refining decision-making, strengthening communication, or building more effective teams. The process is structured but conversational, helping individuals identify opportunities and translate them into meaningful action.
“People who benefit most from coaching are already committed to continuous improvement,” she says. “They’re willing to look at themselves honestly and make adjustments that lead to better outcomes.”
A key theme in her work is the broader impact of leadership. Dr. Jarrell emphasizes that when leaders develop greater awareness and accountability, the effects extend throughout an organization. “When leaders grow, their teams grow with them,” she says.
“You start to see more engagement, more accountability, and a more positive work environment overall.” She also prioritizes sustainability, helping clients build habits and systems that last beyond a single engagement. “It’s not about checking a box,” she adds. “It’s about building something that holds up over time.”

A Holistic Approach to Animal Care
That same thoughtful, long-term approach carries into Speculo Clinical Services, where Dr. Jarrell works closely with the local veterinary community to provide complementary and alternative care for animals. Her services include veterinary acupuncture, Chinese herbal supplements, food therapy, and hospice care, with a focus on supporting pets’ overall balance and well-being.
Her interest in this field began during her time at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she was introduced to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) through a colleague trained in China.
“I witnessed firsthand how effective it could be in managing complex cases,” she says. “As a lifelong learner, I wanted to expand my understanding and incorporate those principles into how I approach animal health.” Today, she applies those techniques to help improve quality of life, particularly for geriatric pets or those facing chronic conditions.
For many families, her work becomes especially meaningful during difficult moments. Through veterinary hospice and end-of-life care, Dr. Jarrell helps guide pet owners through some of the most emotional decisions they face. Her approach is steady and compassionate, focused on clarity and comfort.
She has also worked with organizations like Lap of Love to support families during these transitions, reinforcing her commitment to care that extends beyond clinical treatment.
Grounded in Community and Balance
Outside of her professional roles, Dr. Jarrell stays grounded through time with family and everyday routines that reflect the same sense of balance she brings to her work. She lives with her 93-year-old mother and maintains close connections with her four adult children.
At home, she enjoys working in her yard, tending to raised vegetable beds, and walking local trails with her rescue dog, Luigi. “Those moments help me reset,” she says. “They remind me of the importance of being present and paying attention, which carries over into how I work with clients and families.”
Her community connections extend into both sides of her business. Professionally, she works with university clients and partners with local veterinary clinics, while personally, she remains involved in alumni and professional associations.
Together, those relationships reinforce the local impact of her work—whether she is helping a leader navigate organizational challenges or supporting a family through a pet’s care journey.
At its core, Speculo Business and Clinical Services LLC reflects a deliberate blending of expertise and empathy. “At the end of the day, it’s about helping people and animals reach goals they might not have thought were possible,” Dr. Jarrell says.
“Whether that’s in a boardroom or in someone’s home with their pet, the goal is the same—to provide guidance, support, and a path forward.”
