Tessa Brocker!

Strength, Sacrifice, and the Road to Nationals

At just 16 years old, Tessa Brocker is already living a life that demands extraordinary discipline, resilience, and heart. A sophomore at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School (Class of 2028), Tessa balances a rigorous academic schedule, maintaining an impressive 4.4 GPA, with the intense demands of elite-level gymnastics.

Her days are anything but typical. Six days a week, Tessa makes the 50-mile drive to Kearney, Missouri, training at an elite level while completing a hybrid of in-person and online coursework. Most evenings, she returns home around 6:30 or 7:00 p.m., eats dinner, showers, and takes a quick golf cart ride to unwind before heading to bed, only to do it all again the next day. Sundays are her only day off.

But the past year has tested Tessa in ways few young athletes ever experience.

In January 2025, she suffered a torn Achilles tendon, an injury that required surgery and sidelined her for nearly a full year. For many, it would have been a stopping point. For Tessa, it became a lesson in perseverance. She continued showing up to the gym daily, modifying her training to stay engaged both mentally and physically. She worked on conditioning, stayed sharp on bars, even learning how to safely train without putting weight on her injured foot, and remained deeply committed to her goals.

And just as she was regaining her stride, another challenge arose.

In December, her gym was suddenly shut down after multiple coaches were placed under SafeSport investigation, resulting in the loss of the facility’s USA Gymnastics license. Within days, Tessa and her teammates were displaced. With just three days to regroup, they found a new training home in Kearney. Two weeks later, they were competing in a championship meet.

Tessa didn’t just return…she excelled.

She went on to compete at State, qualifying for Regionals, where she placed 6th overall and earned a coveted spot at Nationals on May 10, 2026. Competing in the all-around (vault, bars, beam, and floor), Tessa now ranks among the top 50 gymnasts in the country, with a national ranking within reach.

Her journey in gymnastics began early. Tessa first stepped into the sport at age four at KC Elite, where her natural talent quickly stood out. By age six, she was training at a top-level Olympic development gym, setting the stage for the elite path she walks today.

Still, her story is about more than athletic achievement.
Over the past two years, Tessa has battled not one but two major injuries: a fractured neck and her Achilles tear. Through it all, she has demonstrated remarkable grit, navigating not only the physical setbacks but also coaching changes and instability within her sport.

Off the mat, Tessa is known for her steady presence and kind heart. She maintains a close-knit group of school friends who understand her demanding schedule, as well as a wide circle of gym friends from across the region. At home, she is a constant source of love and support.

Despite her packed schedule, Tessa finds comfort in routine, whether it’s her go-to lunch (deli meat, fruit, and chips, nearly every day for years) or her love of eggs, which she happily eats five times a week.

Looking ahead, Tessa has her sights set high. With college recruitment conversations beginning in June 2026, she hopes to pursue both her athletic and academic dreams at the highest level. Her ultimate goal? Stanford University, where she would like to study in the medical field.

Through setbacks, uncertainty, and long days, Tessa Brocker continues to show what it truly means to be a young achiever, not just in her accomplishments, but in her resilience, character, and commitment to her dreams.

And this is only the beginning!
