Farris Montgomery: The Quiet Force Behind Full Serve Tennis
Through FullServe Tennis, Farris Montgomery is creating a scalable model that elevates performance, experience, and community connection.
When you first meet Farris Montgomery, you notice his calmness. He carries a confidence that is grounded, never performative. He speaks with clarity and intention, signaling two things immediately: he understands his craft, and he respects the people in front of him. That balance—quiet authority paired with humility—is what makes him compelling.
Raised in Lorain, Ohio, as the fourth of six children, Farris learned early how to stand his ground. His parents worked in manufacturing and education, and discipline was a given. Music and sports became his outlets for expression. He stepped onto a tennis court at six years old and by his teens was competing—and winning—against older players. Often the only African American competitor in his tournaments, he learned early how to perform under pressure while carrying the weight of difference. Those experiences shaped his focus, resilience, and work ethic.
From Ledgers to Legacy
Tennis was demanding in the era Farris came up. Rankings were handwritten in ledgers, and progress came only through repetition and grit. His first coach, Friday Ohunwu, a world-ranked player from Nigeria, trained him rigorously five days a week. That structure taught Farris more than technique; it instilled accountability and respect for fundamentals.
When his coach relocated during Farris’s teenage years, the loss was destabilizing. Life took him in many directions—fatherhood at 19, years touring as a musician, and work across hospitality and fitness. Eventually, tennis called him back. In 2012, he founded Velocity Fit Club in Florida, blending tennis, conditioning, and obstacle training. That concept evolved into what is now Full Serve Tennis, a refined system built on performance, accessibility, and professionalism.
Coaching That Sees the Whole Player
Watching Farris coach reveals his depth. He is not just correcting strokes. He observes balance, breathing, footwork, and emotional response. He teaches players how to reset after mistakes and how to move with intention. His philosophy centers on structured progression, consistency, and accountability.
He uses modern tools like video analysis and integrates fitness, nutrition, and rehabilitation support when needed. Clients have lost weight, returned from injury, and rediscovered confidence on the court. One client described it best: “He pushes you without ever making it feel harsh. You improve, and you enjoy the process.”
A Resume Built on Range
Since 2012, Farris has worked as a private instructor, mentor, and performance coach. He holds PTR certification and has competed across USTA, ITF, and UTR circuits. His experience includes high-performance camps, youth development programs, and roles within established clubs such as Genesis Health Club and the Louisville Tennis Club.
His hospitality background—most notably as head bartender and concierge at one of Louisville’s premier wine bars—shapes how he runs programs. Players are treated like guests. Experience matters.
Beyond tennis, Farris serves on the board of Sparc Hope Single Parent Resource Center and has helped raise more than $115,000 for community initiatives. He regularly offers free clinics and partners with organizations serving underrepresented communities.
The Results Tell the Story
Results define coaching, and Farris delivers. Beginners gain confidence and consistency. Athletes return from injury with trust in their bodies restored. Competitive players rediscover motivation and sharpen performance. These outcomes repeat across demographics and skill levels.
Fitness expert and national champion John Bezerra summarizes it well: Farris leads with integrity, elevates those around him, and produces results.
