Built on Love (and Leashes): How Liz Kostelac Built Top Dog Daycare & Boarding

When Muirfield resident, Liz Kostelac says she loves dogs, she means that she really LOVES dogs. So much so that she spends her days taking care of other people’s dogs as the owner of Top Dog Daycare & Boarding.

Originally from the small town of Wapakoneta, Liz graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Science degree and moved to Columbus shortly after. During her time in college, she worked at Make-A-Wish before launching her own dog-sitting business, Liz Luv Pets. Her experience in walking dogs and homecare both prepared and inspired her to purchase and become the owner of Top Dog in 2016.

Ten years later, she has grown the company into a reputable, full-service pet care business. Top Dog offers everything from boarding and training to grooming, and dogs who stay three nights or more receive a complimentary bath at pickup.

The team takes pride in being a small business that builds lasting relationships with clients and their dogs. Liz credits Top Dog’s success to her dedicated staff, who bring genuine care and attention to everyone who walks through the doors. Every team member is CPR-certified and thoroughly trained, treating each pup as their own with consistent routines that include exercise, enrichment, and fun. Many customers know the staff by name and return regularly - a testament to the team’s professionalism.

Many of Liz’s staff members have been with her for years, some since the very beginning, which speaks to the kind of leader and business owner she is. She never asks her team to do anything she wouldn’t be comfortable doing herself, leading by example at every step. Liz stays deeply knowledgeable across all aspects of the business - from breed sizes and temperament to grooming and basic training - and is always willing to jump in and work alongside her team.

As a board member of Columbus Dog Connection, Liz and the Top Dog team regularly help homeless animals. At their new location, they foster three to five dogs at a time, focusing on those often overlooked for size or breed. The team provides basic training, socialization, and healthy routines to boost each dog’s chance of adoption. While this extra care isn’t compensated, the real reward comes from seeing the dogs gain confidence and find loving homes.

Outside of Top Dog, Liz values time with family. She has two small children, Ellie and Tate, along with three dogs, Milo, Joe, and Bruiser. She loves including her kids in the business whenever possible, and Ellie especially enjoys spending time with the Top Dog crew, helping with the fosters and pitching in wherever she can.

While Top Dog has seen significant growth over the years, the team is continuing to expand with several exciting developments planned for spring. Both current locations will merge into a new facility off Weldon Road, featuring a newly built half-acre dog park with a six-foot privacy fence - ideal for dog meetups, birthday parties, and public events. The new location will also offer full-service haircuts throughout the week in addition to existing grooming services. Looking ahead, the team hopes to introduce a Top Dog bus for weekday daycare pickup and drop-off, adding even more convenience for customers.
