TAILS OF TWO

Two rescue dogs, Beau and King, share how they found their way into a loving home and quickly made it their own. Through playful moments, loyal companionship, and big personalities, they have helped fill the Retzer home with joy, laughter, and unconditional love.

If you ask us how we ended up here, we like to think it was meant to be.

My name is Beauford Corbin, but everyone calls me Beau. I am the brown cockapoo with the very important job of greeting everyone who walks through the door. I joined my family in January 2024 as a puppy after being rescued with my mom and three siblings. The best part is I still get to see them sometimes for playdates, which means lots of running and wrestling. I turned two in December, and I have been bringing energy to this house ever since.

My name has a story. I came with Corbin, and my family loved it enough to keep it as my middle name. They added Beauford because of a drummer named Carter Beauford. I am not exactly sure what a drummer does, but it sounds important.

Now, meet my brother.

I am King, sometimes called King Vito, especially when I wear my sweater vest. I am a white Shih Tzu, and I joined the family in August 2024 at two years old. I came with my name, and they wisely kept it.

Before us, the family had two dogs, Quinny and Jameson. They were here for nearly 16 years and were deeply loved. We are not here to replace them. We are here to bring new joy, and we think we are doing a pretty great job.

Back to me, Beau. One of my specialties is collecting what the family calls “bubs,” small emoticon toys. I always have a favorite color. It used to be red, now it is green. I carry my favorite bub everywhere, especially when greeting Kendall and Andrew in the morning or welcoming someone home.

There is just one issue. King sometimes tries to take my bub.

It is not stealing, Beau. It is borrowing. And your reaction is very loud.

If King takes it, I bark until he drops it. That is only fair.

Speaking of barking, I have an important role. I protect the house from animals on television. If I hear or see one, I run to the TV and bark until it is gone. Even from a deep sleep, I am ready. The humans keep the remote nearby now, which I assume means they appreciate my dedication.

One of the best parts of our lives is the kids. Beau has a special bond with Kendall, waking her up each morning with his bub and lots of kisses. He does the same with Andrew. I prefer a calmer start to the day, but I respect the routine.
Kendall has also done something impressive. She held a bake sale and donated $200 to the rescue where Beau came from. We think that is a big deal.

Life here is pretty amazing. We sleep in the big bed, go on car trips, and are included in everything. This year, we were even featured on the front of the family Christmas card. The kids were on the back, which feels appropriate.

If there is one thing we want people to know, it is this: we both came from rescues, and there are so many dogs like us still waiting for homes. Our family says they will always choose to rescue, and we are very glad they did.

We may have arrived when there was an empty space, but now it is filled with toys, barking, laughter, and love. That feels exactly right.
