GIVING WITH GRIT

Darren Miller's mission of endurance, leadership, and giving back

For Darren Miller, endurance athletics and community service are deeply connected. As President of Every Breath A Gift, LLC, Darren has spent more than a decade inspiring audiences around the world through keynote presentations focused on resilience, leadership, and purpose. His journey combines professional success, extraordinary athletic achievement, and a lifelong commitment to helping children and families facing medical challenges.

Darren's volunteer efforts began in 2009 when he co-founded the Forever Fund at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in honor of Anthony Cartieri. The fund provides support for families facing some of life's most difficult circumstances as their children receive care. Recognizing the need for additional resources, Darren established Team Forever, a nonprofit organization that channels donations raised through endurance athletic events directly to the Forever Fund.

Driven by the relationships he built with children and families in the hospital's infant cardiothoracic unit, Darren turned his passion for athletics into a powerful fundraising platform. His accomplishments include becoming the first athlete in history to complete the prestigious Oceans Seven marathon swim challenge on his first attempts in 2013. Spanning five continents, the achievement earned him recognition from The Weather Channel as a Top Extreme Adventure Athlete, from Men's Health as an Everyday Hero, and inclusion in the 2020 Guinness Book of World Records. His swimming costume is also displayed at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh.

Today, Darren continues to train for and complete endurance events around the world to raise awareness and vital funding for children's causes. While his work remains closely tied to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, he also supports organizations globally that share a commitment to improving the lives of children and families through action and compassion.

Beyond fundraising, Darren serves his community as an elected member of Murrysville Council and contributes to several local organizations, including the Westmoreland Heritage Trail, the Murrysville Parks & Recreation Foundation, and the Sportsmen & Landowners Alliance of Murrysville. He is also the founder and race director of the Three Rivers Marathon Swim and the Export 100 Trail Run.

Family remains central to Darren's mission. His daughter Reagan, 9, and son Penn, 8, regularly accompany him on adventures and volunteer efforts, learning firsthand the value of service and perseverance.
