The Forrestals: A Family Rooted in Food, Art, and Community
Tucked into the Starwood neighborhood, the Forrestal family has quickly become a beloved presence in the community since arriving a little over a year ago. The household includes Nathan (47) and Christa (34) Forrestal, along with their two children, Olive (14) and James (8), plus a lively menagerie of pets that includes two cats, a recently rescued kitten, and a Pug-French Bulldog mix named Banks.
A Family Tale (and a Long Way to Frisco)
Christa grew up in McAllen, Texas, and came to the Dallas area for college, while Nathan hails from Ardmore, Oklahoma, just 90 minutes away. After graduating, Nathan moved to Dallas to take a position with Marriott International, eventually crossing paths with Christa.
Their meeting has become something of a family legend. The two connected online and met for a drink, quickly discovering an uncanny number of things in common, right down to a favorite song so obscure it's never performed live. Though their first date ended amicably, Nathan couldn't shake the feeling that the evening shouldn't be over. After his other plans fell through, he called Christa back, and the two met again that same night for a glass of wine at The Shops. The rest, as they say, is history. The couple married in St. Thomas and recently celebrated their ninth wedding anniversary.
Career Paths Built on Education and Expertise
Both Nathan and Christa bring impressive academic and professional credentials to their household. Nathan earned a degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales University and holds a Masterworks Certification from the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley. He now serves as Director of Food and Nutrition with Aramark at Texas Health Resources.
Christa holds a BS in Neuroscience from the University of Texas at Dallas, along with an MBA from Texas Tech University with concentrations in AI and Data Science in Business, as well as Health Organization Management. She currently works as Director of Network Optimization for HCA Healthcare.
Growing Kids with Big Personalities
Olive, 14, is a gifted artist who has competed in the Junior Vase Art Show for several years running. She also plays piano, once played basketball in middle school, and recently discovered a love of baking after taking a croissant making class at Sur la Table. These days, she's also diving into learning Spanish through Duolingo.
James, 8, is the family's resident comedian. He even earned an end of year award for Class Clown. Athletic and energetic, he plays soccer and basketball and has recently taken an interest in tennis. He also loves art and has a fondness for spicy food.
Together, the siblings share a love of skiing, with Breckenridge and Taos among their favorites, and travel. Olive is partial to Cabo, while James can't quite decide between New York City and Washington, D.C. But when it comes to a family favorite, everyone agrees: St. Lucia tops the list.
A Family United by Art and Food
If there's a common thread running through the Forrestal household, it's a shared passion for art and food. Nathan plays tennis, creates art, produces music, and cooks plant based and vegan cuisine. Christa is an avid reader and frequent baker, whipping up cookies and desserts several times a week, a nice complement to Nathan's culinary background, since, as the family jokes, the professional chef in the house doesn't bake.
A recent spring break trip to Santa Fe left the whole family enchanted by the city's art and culture, reinforcing what they already suspected: they might just be a family of foodies, always on the hunt for a new restaurant or a reason to cook together.
An Unexpected New Family Member
The Forrestals' pet family grew in a memorable way when a neighbor mentioned hearing strange noises coming from her car. Investigating together, the family discovered a kitten had climbed up near the engine while the car was parked. It took Nathan two evenings to safely retrieve the kitten, who has since become a cherished member of the household, joining their two resident cats and Banks, a Pug-French Bulldog mix who was originally a foster.
Holidays Mean Family, Lakes, and Long Visits
For the Forrestals, holidays and special occasions are rarely quick affairs. They tend to stretch into multi day gatherings with extended family. Trips to Ardmore often include time at Lake Murray and Lake Texoma with Nathan's family, while visits to the Rio Grande Valley connect them with Christa's relatives. Both families have also made the trip to stay with the Forrestals in Starwood. This summer, the family will travel to McAllen to celebrate Christa's brother's wedding.
Finding Community in Frisco
The Forrestals have embraced everything their corner of Frisco has to offer. They're regulars at The Star and Legacy West, frequent Kaleidoscope Park and old downtown Frisco, and rarely miss an FC Dallas or Texas Legends game.
Within the neighborhood itself, the family makes a point of showing up, attending as many community events as possible and praising the warm, welcoming spirit they've encountered since moving in.
Giving Back
Community involvement runs deep for the Forrestals. Christa volunteers with DFW Pug Rescue, occasionally fostering dogs. In fact, that's how Banks became part of the family. She's also active with the Spears PTA. Nathan, meanwhile, volunteers at a local animal sanctuary, where he contributes to fundraising and animal advocacy efforts.
Favorite Neighborhood Moments
When asked about their favorite memories in the neighborhood so far, the Forrestals point to simple pleasures: family strolls along the walking trail, festive community gatherings like Christmas and pool parties, and time spent at the neighborhood tennis courts, where Nathan is a familiar face.
From their unconventional love story to their shared passions for food, art, and giving back, the Forrestal family has embraced their new community wholeheartedly, and the neighborhood is lucky to have them.
