A beloved Placitas tradition, bringing neighbors together for a good cause. What began as a simple brainstorming idea at a Placitas Chamber of Commerce board meeting nine years ago has grown into a much-anticipated community tradition: the annual Placitas Chili Cook-Off.

Organized by the Placitas Chamber of Commerce, the cook-off brings together residents and chili enthusiasts for an afternoon of friendly competition, delicious food and, most importantly, community spirit. Over the years, the event has been hosted at several chamber member business locations throughout the Placitas area and beyond, but its purpose has remained the same—to have fun while raising money for local nonprofit organizations. This year’s cook-off took place on October 3, 2026 and was hosted by La Puerta Real Estate, 1 Ridge Court, Placitas, New Mexico, where the Chamber offices are housed.

The event was open to everyone in Placitas. Attendees entered their own chili creation, sample the various dishes prepared by fellow community members, cast their votes for their favorites and enjoy the camaraderie that has become the hallmark of the event. And there is a very good reason to bring your appetite—and your cash. Guests are encouraged to bring their dollar bills to vote for their favorite chili dishes and to purchase raffle tickets for a selection of donated items. Every dollar raised this year through the cook-off and raffle went to benefit this year’s nonprofit recipient, the 4-H Bull-snakes.

The chili cook-off is more than a contest. It is an opportunity for Placitas neighbors to come together, share a meal, support a local organization and celebrate the generosity that makes the community special.
