Celebrating National Cooperative Month

Every October, cooperatives across the country celebrate National Cooperative Month. For the members of Poudre Valley REA, it’s a reminder that their electric provider operates differently and that difference delivers value every day.

For many PVREA members, value begins with the confidence that their electricity will remain both dependable and affordable. Whether powering a home, running a business, or supporting a family farm, PVREA members benefit from Colorado’s lowest electric rates and reliability performance that ranks among the best in the nation.

But the value of cooperative membership extends beyond the electric meter. More than 80 years ago, electric cooperatives across the country were built on one shared idea: neighbors needed to work together to provide a service when for-profit businesses would not.

That same principle of neighbors helping neighbors continues to guide Poudre Valley REA today. Because the cooperative is owned by the members it serves, local people help shape local priorities. Through member engagement, locally elected directors, and employees who live and work in the communities they serve, the cooperative remains focused on meeting the evolving needs of Northern Colorado.

That member-focused approach creates value in different ways for different members. For a small business owner, it may mean reliable electricity that keeps operations running. For a family planning a home energy upgrade, it may mean access to rebates and trusted guidance. For a student, it may mean a scholarship, youth leadership camp, or educational opportunity that opens new doors.

Though the examples vary, they all reflect the same cooperative principle that first brought electricity to rural Northern Colorado. Local people continue to identify needs, establish priorities, and shape solutions that create value for cooperative members. More than 80 years later, that commitment remains unchanged.

National Cooperative Month celebrates the cooperative difference. The real story belongs to the generations of people who have carried that commitment forward. From the member-owners who founded PVREA to those who guide, support, and depend on it today, each has helped write the next chapter of our cooperative story.

It takes all of us working together to create something greater than any one of us could alone. That’s the power of Poudre Valley.
