A Perfect Lot, A Lifetime of Memories

How one family’s spontaneous discovery of Red Tail led to nearly three decades of friendship, tradition, and community.

My husband, Dennis, and I were inspired to move to Red Tail because of the opportunity to build a custom home on what we felt was the perfect lot — and still do. When we walked the property for the first time, there was a basketball hoop nailed to one of the trees, and it instantly felt like a homesite. We could picture our three children playing in the yard and growing up there. In that moment, we knew this was where we wanted to build our home and raise our family.

We had never even heard of Red Tail before that day. We were simply out looking at model homes in Avon when we stumbled upon it. Something about the neighborhood immediately felt right. From the beginning, we knew this was the place for us, and we have now lived on Royal St. George Drive for almost 27 years.

One of our favorite early memories was when all the members received a special invitation to meet legendary golfer Sam Snead. Since the clubhouse had not yet been built, the gathering was held at a hotel in Westlake, where we mingled with what would become our future friends and neighbors. At the time, there was only a small mobile home at the entrance that served as the center for golf memberships.

Over the years, our street and neighborhood became so much more than just a place to live — it truly became a community. We hosted progressive dinners, progressive martini parties, cookouts, block parties, Easter egg hunts, football gatherings, New Year’s celebrations, and even the occasional Oscars party. We welcomed new babies, celebrated milestones, and created countless memories together.

After a couple of years, many of the women in the neighborhood started a Bunco group. We played together for many years, and although we no longer play Bunco, we still enjoy getting together for game nights. These women have become lifelong friends — friends I wouldn’t trade for the world. After more than 25 years, we truly feel like family. We’ve traveled together on vacations and weekend getaways and have supported one another through both the good times and the difficult moments.

When our children were younger and living at home, life in the neighborhood often centered around golf and family traditions. While things are a little quieter now that many of our kids have grown and moved on, the friendships remain just as strong. One tradition I especially look forward to each year is our annual girls’ trip, which is always a highlight.

Our family has truly enjoyed everything that Red Tail has to offer. It’s a wonderful place to raise a family or enjoy retirement. The neighborhood is quiet, friendly, and welcoming. It’s common to see neighbors out walking, sitting on porches or patios, and stopping to connect with one another.

Looking back now, it’s amazing to see how the community has grown. What started as a few homes and big dreams has turned into a place filled with wonderful neighbors, lasting friendships, and so many memories.

If we had to describe Red Tail in three words, they would be:
Family, friendships, and community.

After nearly three decades here, we have shared so many wonderful memories, and Red Tail will always hold a very special place in our hearts.
