Candy Clash

Chocolate or fruity? Red Tail residents have plenty of opinions when it comes to the ultimate Halloween treat.

As Halloween approaches, the same question is asked yearly: is chocolate or candy the superior Halloween candy? Trick-or-treaters always split down the middle, putting sweet, decadent chocolate against sour, fruity sweets.

While national sales show worldwide brands like Kit Kat and Reese’s dominate store shelves, local preferences show there is no group consensus on the best candy. A favorite candy can be very personal!

For some, fruit-flavored confections easily win the argument. Ninth grader Viv Rozar prefers sour gummy worms, favoring the tangy flavor over traditional chocolate sweets.

On the other hand, chocolate remains a major favorite. As an oldie, Liz Sexton prefers Heath bars, enjoying the crunch of the classic toffee. I myself prefer Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, as the balance between the creaminess of the peanut butter and the soft chocolate melts in your mouth.

While a small survey won’t change national statistics, it perfectly captures the feeling of seeing your favorite candy bar on a perfectly decorated doorstep come Halloween night.   While everyone has a specific trading tactic with a pile of miscellaneous candy like Dots and Almond Joys, there will always be someone who favors the underdogs. Ultimately, whether south patch kids or a Twix bar satisfies you, Halloween is about the endless memories with friends, although a 100 grand bar is underrated!
