Murphy Family Fun
A competitive, travel-loving family making memories in Red Tail.
For Karyn and Simon Murphy, life is always better when there’s a little friendly competition involved. Whether they’re playing golf, pickleball, tennis or a board game, the couple loves staying active and having fun together. But these days, their favorite pastime is much simpler: spending time with their 9-month-old son, Ronan, and making memories as a family.
Karyn grew up in Westlake, Ohio, while Simon is originally from Wexford, Ireland. The couple moved from Chicago to Red Tail a little over a year ago, bringing with them a love of travel, family, and an active lifestyle. Karyn attended Ohio University, while Simon attended Mercyhurst University, and both have built successful careers—Simon as a Senior Finance Manager at Glanbia Performance Nutrition and Karyn as a Senior Sales Support Manager at TRG.
Travel continues to be a big part of their lives. The couple enjoys returning to Ireland to visit Simon’s family and spending time at the Lake Erie Islands. One of Karyn’s favorite destinations is Siesta Key, Florida, a place that has been part of her family’s traditions for generations. This year, she was especially excited to introduce Ronan to the family tradition. Simon’s favorite destination is, naturally, Ireland, and the family’s June trip home was especially meaningful. One of their favorite traditions there is spending an evening with family and friends at their local pub, Kings Bay Inn.
Closer to home, the Murphys enjoy attending sporting events. Karyn’s sister works for the Cleveland Guardians, giving the family plenty of opportunities to catch a game. Ronan experienced his first Guardians game in September. Sports are clearly a family affair: Karyn is a passionate Cleveland sports fan, particularly when it comes to the Browns, while Simon will happily watch just about any sport, from Rory McIlroy on the golf course to Manchester United, hurling and Gaelic football.
Food is another favorite way the family spends time together. The Murphys love pizza and are always willing to try a new spot, with favorites including Il Rione, Citizen Pie and In Forno. For takeout, Giovanni’s in North Olmsted is a go-to. At home, family dinners are a regular tradition, often featuring a steak cooked on the grill or reverse-seared, with a generous side of mashed potatoes—a must-have for Simon, given his Irish roots.
When the day winds down and Ronan is in bed, Karyn and Simon enjoy relaxing with a little television and perhaps opening a bottle of wine. Their current viewing includes shows such as Ted Lasso, while Karyn also enjoys a guilty-pleasure dose of Love Island and Bravo reality TV. Musically, the couple enjoys country as well as other genres, recently seeing Mount Joy at Nautica and hoping to catch artists such as Luke Combs, Noah Kahan and Ella Langley.
Life with Ronan has added a whole new dimension to the Murphys' favorite activities. Although he’s still too young for organized activities, he’s already showing plenty of personality—and energy. He loves pushing himself up to stand and celebrating with a little dance once he gets there.
The family’s beloved dog, Jaxon—or Jax—rounds out the Murphy household.
Since moving to Red Tail, the couple has enjoyed the neighborhood’s welcoming atmosphere, especially the opportunity to take family walks and get out and about together. With a young baby keeping them busy, they haven’t yet been as involved in the community as they’d like, but they look forward to changing that as Ronan gets older.
Perhaps the best part of calling Red Tail home is that family is never far away. Karyn’s sisters, Kristie Nelson and Kelsey Rames, both live in the neighborhood. After spending five years in Chicago and traveling back and forth to Los Angeles and Ireland for extended periods, having her sisters nearby has been especially meaningful.
For the Murphys, Red Tail is becoming more than just a place to live. It’s a place where family is close, new traditions are taking shape and Ronan is beginning to grow up surrounded by people who love him.
