Built for the Long Run
As a distance runner, Heidi spends countless hours training
A pair of running shoes, a determined mindset, and a love for her teammates have carried Heidi Bohannon from local roads in Midlothian to some of the biggest high school races in the region. Whether she's chasing a personal record, competing at state championships, or encouraging a teammate through a tough workout, the Monacan High School distance runner brings heart to everything she does. For Heidi, running is about much more than competition. “I love meeting friends through my sport and getting to know people better by going through difficult workouts with them,” she says.
As a distance runner, Heidi spends countless hours training after school and logging extra miles throughout the Castlebridge and Oakengate neighborhoods. Her dedication has earned her opportunities to compete at the Virginia State Championships, Adidas Indoor Track Nationals, and Nike Cross Regionals. “It’s exciting to travel and compete against so many talented runners,” she says.
Success in distance running doesn’t happen overnight, and Heidi knows that better than most. While she has earned medals and recognition throughout her career, she credits her progress to consistency and commitment. “Running is a sport that requires constant practice to maintain the level you want to be at,” she explains. “It’s mainly consistency and dedication to the sport that got me there.”
One of the biggest influences on Heidi’s journey has been Coach J. “Coach J is my favorite mentor because he is so knowledgeable and is always pushing us to be our best,” she says. “He keeps track of PRs and other information so he knows exactly how to help us achieve our goals.”
Although she doesn’t closely follow professional runners, Heidi finds inspiration much closer to home. “I admire my teammates and love watching them grow throughout the seasons,” she says. Watching them improve and overcome challenges motivates her to keep pushing herself. The friendships she has built through running are among the things she treasures most about the sport.
Some of Heidi’s favorite memories happen away from the starting line. “I love the day before cross country states,” she shares. “The team hangs out together, gets lunch, walks around the outlets, and has dinner together.” Those moments remind her that running is just as much about community as competition.
Running has taught Heidi lessons she carries into every part of life. “I’ve learned to not give up even when things get difficult; there’s always a way through,” she says. Looking ahead, she hopes to run in college and was recently selected as a 2027 PR Next Gen Ambassador through PR Run/Walk, a program that promotes leadership, mentorship, and community engagement within Richmond’s running culture. Her advice for future runners is simple: “Just do it!”
