A Friendly Face at the Door
Bleu the Lab has made himself part of the daily routine—for his family and just about everyone else he meets
Mark and Kathy Whitesell have called Sedgefield home for six years, but it’s their seven-year-old English Lab, Bleu, who may be the most recognizable member of the household.
Bleu joined the family as a puppy after Mark picked him up from a breeder in Thomasville. “We had first pick of the litter,” Mark says, “and he was the only one that kept following me around. It was a no-brainer.”
His name came later—with a little help from customers. Bleu accompanies Mark to work each day at Rental Supply, where regulars were invited to weigh in. The winning choice? A nod to the movie Old School and its memorable line, “You’re my boy, Blue!”
At work and at home, Bleu has a simple but consistent mission: greet everyone like they matter. He’s known for meeting visitors at the door with a toy in his mouth—sometimes his favorite “Duck,” sometimes one of the many others he keeps on hand for gifting. “He greets everyone,” Mark says, “even a guy that came in and robbed us.” Delivery drivers are among his favorite people, thanks to the treats they often bring along.
Around the neighborhood, Bleu enjoys daily walks and spending time with his sister, Stormy, another familiar face at Rental Supply.
For Mark and Kathy, Bleu has brought a steady sense of companionship, especially as they’ve adjusted to life as empty nesters. “He’s helped us with that transition,” Mark says. And in the process, he’s become not just part of their family—but a small, welcoming presence for the wider community as well.
